I was thinking the DVD drives were in a "special mode" or condition when not married to the xbox. So during assembly, when the drive put in the xbox (or sent back to a user and placed back in) and powered up, the xbox would detect it was not married and send of the DVD key to use. Now they only work with each other.

This would prevent a problem if the wrong lot of DVD were place on the assembly line and the DVD keys did not match the motherboard.

But I am guess since the firmware has been disassembled and re-written that is such a mode was available on a drive then that would elimiate the need for getting keys at all.
