Truth be told, they probably want to block (real) homebrew even more than piracy.

Look at how much more attention they payed to blocking unsigned code than anything else.

They likely want to block free emulators etc, so they can charge for their inferior one-off "homebrew".

Don't forget, Live was probably always the true goal.

You pay to watch ads, buy crap that has no physical overhead, and get hooked by meaningless "achievements"  and serverless online matches. (Both of which cost them little and keep you looking at adds, buying data, and paying subcription fees to do so.)

360 is just a means to get it into as many homes as possible.

Very good talk, explains the security issues of Xbox1 in great detail and tells you exactly how the KK exploit works.
However I'm curious on how they got their hands in the Hypervisor code.
The timing attack may be a good way to get your hand on the CPU key but as time has shown the interest in homebrew (without being able to play games) seems really low.
I onder which console will be the best homebrew platform in the future...

this video actually spoke of this exploit.

OT: this video was very interesting and went into some Depth about the HRMOR eploit that thus far has not been shown in this light, the only thing that they didnt answer is what i am most interested in, how they studied the piece of code that caused this exploit to work, when it is never in a decrypted state in open bus

From the way he dodged the question ("didn't leak but I can't tell you") I would guess that it DID leak but they are not able to disclose the source.
I can't think of any other way that they couldn't about...

really liked the talk, especially the HV part. but at the end when he was trying to cover for the hardware failure rate, that ticked me off. i personally have 2 360s, both failed within a year, replaced both heat sinks (paid for) and both have died again. roommate's elite got the RROD, so does my best friend from home. so far i haven't seen anyone with a 360 that hasn't face the hardware issue.

The Xbox's Security was a total cluster-fuck of good ideas implemented wrong. The 360 re-builds these ideals, and adds some hardware/design trickery to thwort hackers, So far they are doing ok with the homebrew scene, but piracy is extremely rampant when it comes to the Xbox 360, and this we can also blame on sites like Xbox-Scene, TehSkeen, and any other site that reports "Scene" News, Heres an example, If someone tells you an ATM is spitting out money on the corner, your gonna run and also tell whoever you see correct? It's the same with Piracy on the Xbox 360, somebody tells someone, then its posted to the scene sites as news, then the little nooblets who don't want to pay for anything tell other little nooblets, and then the process starts all over again with a new hardware revision.

All in all the idea of the 360 is good, the security is better than decent, the OG Xbox was a horrible design, but like someone else said in maybe the 1st or 2nd reply, the Xbox was made with better(quality) Hardware.. wich we all know, if the hardwares design sucks, the package is gonna suck even harder.

Something slightly off the topic...

I've heard talk of old 360's and the first models which seem to have issues with security, overheating, etc.

How does one distinguish between the models? Is there a difference in model numbers?

Pretty much ALL the systems pre-HDMI output will break, from what I've seen, anything pre-2008 Manufacture date is a toss up.. but thats just my opinion..
