Sat TV Crypto Hacker was Offered 100k USD to hack the 360 - Not Enough
Posted by XanTium | April 4 22:36 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From slashdot.org:
Quote

This article from a Swiss newspaper recounts the appearance of Christopher Tarnovsky at the European Black Hat conference.
While with NDS, Tarnovsky cracked Kudeslki's satellite TV encryption, but claims he didn't post the result on the open Net. His responses to audience questions are amusing, in particular when someone from Microsoft asks him about breaking the Xbox 360 console. Tarnovsky replies: "I have been offered 100,000 dollars for the break, but I replied that it was not enough."

Don't know everything about satelite encryption but what I do know is that if this guy could crack the Nagra 1 or 2 code, then he could get the one for the 360. Of course if he released it he would face some jailtime of some sort, prolly why he declined the 100,000$$ offer.

i'm sure he could find a million people prepared to pay $1 for the hack.  so 100,000 really isnt enough.

but yea, he's not even close to what hacking is like from my view.  from my view it appears to be groups/individuals who spend a hell of a lot of time making something and then giving it away for free, ready to move onto the next puzzle.

this guy is obivously very talented to sell the 360 hack for $100,000 is as he says to cheap when if proven to MS they would give him afew mill. not to release it + a high paying job with MS , thats if NASA or someone like that didnt grab him 1st. with a job offer, so your talking life changing events here , so ofcourse he aint going to sell for no measly $100,000

Wouldn't teams like infectus be offering him money if that was true. They are making money off the timing attack pcb, and the infectus 2. The guy is full of hot air.

Does that mean you just took the words grammar/punctuation and shat all over them? Pobodys nerfect y'know, but come on dude.

Anyways, ya, the guys a douche. Although I do agree that if he COULD hack it, why not dangle it in front of MS to get a job/more money. That's probably what he's doing...

If hacking the 360 for him actually was mostly about a financial issue, then I surely understand he wouldn't take $100k.. Hacking it is worth a great deal more than that. As he said, he's not stupid.

If he actually would be able to hack is a totally different question though.
