480p And Xebian
« on: February 18, 2005, 04:28:00 PM »

Does anyone know of how to enable 480p in Xebian? I'm using the latest (1.1.0) distro, and I have a 1.6. Does Xebian suport 480p on 1.6's?

I dont think the 1.6 xcalibur chip suports 480p, but I could be wrong and often am.
There is also a new version xebian released (1.1.1).

Yes it supports 480p (all Xboxes do). I run Gentoox in 480p, so I know Linux supports 1.6's in 480p. Maybe the Xbox-Linux team hasn't implemented it in Xebian yet.

Yea, I meant to say 1.1.1. That's what I'm using.

It does in Gentoox. It doesn't completely get rid of it, but it's much better than in 480i. Or maybe it's because I'm using a computer monitor (with a VD-Z3), but either way, 480p is better.

Hey Trevante, I also have the vd-z3 but I can't seem to boot gentoox, how did you install it? I used the ftp method. From what I've gathered, gentoox doesn't work in 480p, or does it? So should I use the cd install method? I'm dying to get this linux stuff on my damn xbox!

I used the CD install, but really, it shouldn't matter how you installed it because in the end you're just copying files to the HDD.

Gentoox works fine in 480p (and higher resolutions). What you have to do is boot up with the composite cables and login as root. Open a terminal and then run xbvset. Choose HDTV and choose a resolution that your Xbox and your monitor supports (i'd recommend 720p if possible). Hit enter, answer anyother questions it asks (it may ask you to choose horizontal and vertical overscan values) and then let it reboot.

Turn off the Xbox and plug in your component cables, then run Gentoox, and it should run in whatever resolution you choose.

Ok I tried using the composite cables, it worked! However I'm still kind of stuck I guess... the screen just hangs there saying * bringing cth8 up... *. I don't have an usb keyboard or mouse or anything. So is this the point where I ssh into the xbox? I don't want to just shut it off, as I've heard about corrupting the filesystem, if not properly done.

thnx in advance.

ps: i already downloaded putty :)

It WORKS!! *sheds a tear*

Ok here's the breakdown...

I have a modded pal xbox converted to ntsc using enigmahs video switch disc, because i needed the prog. scan output for my vd-z3.
After much research I decided to make the jump; install linux (I wanted a cheap webserver!)
I used the ftp method to install gentoox all was going well.
However when I  got to my first boot, I got the flashing orange led fan going wild thing: gentoox wouldn't boot!
After much trying, I followed Trevante's advice used the composite cables connected to a tv. I got through the setup however it got stuck at a message (i don't remember what it was, i think something with the network settings)
So after a lot of permutations, I switched back to PAL, resulting in color gentoox boot screen, and voila I got through! However this was in composite mode!

anyways to make a long story short: I switched back to pal mode connected the component cables, remembered which buttons to press to navigate to gentoox in evox (in pal mode, i can't see the evox menu --> no prog scan), started up gentoox and voila gentoox in 720p! It might seem simple, bbut i was literally pulling my hair out!

Next frontier booting gentoox while in ntsc mode! How can I tell gentoox I have an ntsc xbox, again?! During setup, it asked for it (I chose pal :( ) but now I want to switch to ntsc, so I can use the switch disk again, so I can see evox again(*sigh*)!

What command should I use??!

ps: You won't be having this problems, if you do a native install, I guess!

Switch back to NTSC first and see if Gentoox keeps freezing. I don't think it should matter if you're in NTSC or PAL, Gentoox should load regardless.

PS: Next time you need to launch an XBE in Evox and can't see what's on the screen, ftp into your Xbox with FlashFXP and press ctrl+R. Type

CODE
Execute locationofthexbeyouwanttolaunch

So if you wanted to launch Halo and it was in F:\Games\Halo\default.xbe, you would type

CODE
Execute F:\games\Halo\default.xbe

Much easier than blindly navigating through menus.

Thanx for replying man....

I tried switching to ntsc but that's when I get the flashing orange led + fan spinning problem: gentoox won't boot when it's set to ntsc...:S
At setup (using composite in pal mode) I told setup I was using a pal video signal, maybe this is causing the conflict?! If I can't get this to work, I might as well give up this whole dual booting stuff, as I can't get ProgScan in pal mode in evox and games 'n stuff...

I also don't think it's because of Evox, I tried running Gentoox from xbmc...same stuff
