Read, Re Read & Still Need Advice Please
« on: August 23, 2007, 05:31:00 PM »

Hi guys,

I've been modding for several years, most of my friends & i have young kids who cannot handle discs yet.  The xbox 1 was great for our young children, whose games & films where usually damaged beyond repair by neverending sweety eating, sticky young fingers !!... we could buy originals & then back them upto the bigger aftermarket hdd so nothing got damaged by them.

I finally have my first xbox360 & have spent most weeknights reading this & several other forums i used to haunt when the xbox 1 came out.

sadly after spending a week reading up, i still have lots of questions i am sure you have all heard before, please can i ask the advice of anyone who knows more than i have yet been able to find, i have read the stickies, other people's replies, questions & opinions, but it seems the overall 360 scene doesnt know itself, or that is just the impression i get...

for example, 1 person says they have an nme chip & another has an infectus, 3 others have a globe360... 200 pages of problems with each of these chips later & several people recommending you just flash the drive using an ixtreme patched bios puts me back at square one.... then there are few & varied stories of replacement desktops, i used to really enjoy the customised evox menu for the xbox 1, so simple for kids & u could remove anything u didnt want them to have...

various posts contradict each other on wether 079 drives can be patched & 200 posts on how good / bad an xecuter360 device is leaves me completely at a loss as to wether i want to part with money for one...

so as you can see, i have done some reading, please dont delete this thread or reply, go read pinnned topics as i have done that & am sorry, but it has left me confused...

like most, i would like to be able to :-

upgrade the 20gb hdd to 250gb+
store & play games & films on / from the hdd of the 360 (all of which i legally own)
play multi region games / films
play backup discs in my xbox 360 drive
copy files to & from the hdd easily (ftp or direct connection without taking my pc / xbox apart)

i do not think i will be using xbox live as i believe it is a subscription service & i already pay for my son to play world of warcraft, he only gets 1 subscription at a time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) although when i look further into it this may change.....

i do not believe all of the above is yet possible, anyone who has had a good experience with a recent soloution, if u dont mind, please let me know how u are getting on & what works for you. i have read alot of good posts, but as many contradictory ones...

i remember how simple an xecuter chip was to install, flash & use. for this reason alone i would like another chip soloution, although everything i have read seems to point to drive flashing only, but that i dont believe would give me a soloution to any of the other things on my wishlist (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

sorry for the long post,
thanks in advance

ok to put it simpler, tonnes of views & no replies... someone must be able to offer some advice...

is there anything a chip offers that a dvd drive flash doesnt?
are any of the chip soloutions stable & offer at least the same features as the dvd flash soloution?
i dont believe hdd playback is possible, media streaming, is this possible on the xbox360?
does anyone know any reason i shouldnt use a chip?
if u save ur original dvd flash bios & then reflash it, can it be restored to its virgin state?
can an xbox 360 be factory reset so no usage information is stored anywhere on it?
can u easily swop game / dvd playback regions?

thanks in advance,

I am by NO stretch of imagination an expert, or even intermediate, im fairly new to the scene so take my replies with a pinch of salt, but ill try and help you out with what i have learned myself.

As far as im aware, a chip offers nothing when compared to flashing you drive firmware, i do know there is a chip or 2 meant for other purposes, "infectus" i believe is to do with being able to fiddle with and backup your actual kernel data and is also being used in a fairly recent attack on the 360 which people hope with some work/other hardware will allow us to downgrade any current and maybe future version of the kernel/dash to an earlier/vulnerable version..and so maybe get homebrew and hdd loading etc that we all want running. beware, i know little about this.

I believe the NME chip is stable and widely used to enable playing of backups in a fairly easy manner, however flashing the firmware still has an advatage..not only in cost, but also with the ability to easily return to stock, and also easily be able to upgrade to a new firmware should the need arise (M$ finds a way to ban us, and someone comes up with a counter)

Playback of games from the HDD is not yet possible, and most likely a LONG LONG way off atm, although many teams are working non stop to crack the 360 itself, hold yer breath. Media streaming is possible out the box as long as your are playing WMVs...and if you install TVersity, or a similar uPNP server on your PC, your pc will transcode (convert on the fly) any unsuppoorted media to WMV so the 360 can watch it without leaving yer sofa. be warned semi decent pc required..and if you are thinking of transcoding some proper HD content..it might be time to invest in a supercomputer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)  my 3.33GHz dual core handles trascoding to 640 X 480 without any problems.

does anyone know any reason i shouldnt use a chip?

As above, its not as reversible/upgradable as flashing the firmware atm.

if u save ur original dvd flash bios & then reflash it, can it be restored to its virgin state?

Yes, as long as you backup the originalfirmware before writing the modded one, you can at any time go back to stock without issues. make sure you BACKUP your original firmware, as it contains a key that links the drive to the 360, and if you ever want to get a new drive, you will NEED that key.

can an xbox 360 be factory reset so no usage information is stored anywhere on it?

I have no idea on this one, im pretty sure its an unknown.

can u easily swop game / dvd playback regions?

Not easily, i believe if you have the exploitable kernel version (45** - "**" meaning sommit sommit, my memory fails me as to what number exactly) then you can do the exploit to get linux installed, then jump through several burning hoops, do a rain dance, and then get some info from the 360, which you can use to jump some more, and then change the regions etc. for me, its far too hard/complicated atm, but people are working on it, stay tuned and hopefully in time there will be ways.

on the plus side, alot of games seem to be region free, meaning you can play them on any 360.

Hope all this helps.

Hi lestatplease,

thanks for the reply, no expert? hobbyist definately, either way u certainly know more than me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

the answers you gave were great, exactly what i was looking for m8. I am confident electronically, just dont know whats going on in the scene at the moment. all the reading i had done left me a little confused where i should start off...

thanks again for the great info, i hope it also helps others starting up late in the scene (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
