Soft-mod With Usb Drive
« on: August 16, 2007, 09:28:00 AM »

Hello,

My friend currently owns an Xbox 360 Premium (20GB). He wants to soft-mod (for playing backups, media, emulation, etc.) his Xbox 360 without voiding his warranty. So we devised this possible idea :

1. Get a USB hard drive
2. Install the modded OS on the drive using a computer
3. Plug the USB hard drive into the Xbox 360.
4. Make it boot from the USB hard drive.

My question is that I would like to know if this is possible, especially the part about booting from the USB hard drive.

Thanks

you can't boot anything on the 360 from a USB drive. if you want to mod your system  your only options are either a modchip, or a firmware flash (which involves opening the system and voiding your warranty)

Then is it possible to have a regular soft-mod, and use the USB drive as a storage device so you can store backups ?

there is no "softmod" so to speak, its a firmware flash. and even with that, you need to burn all your games to dual layer dvd+r. games would probably run terrible if you they were stored on a USB device anyways due to the low transfer speeds.

OK Then, We will do a firmware flash. I know it would be ridiculous to store backups on a 20GB hard drive. It would have been nice to use a bigger storage device but it doesn't seem possible. It is possible to store the backups and play them on a single-layer DVD if the game is smaller than 4.7GB ? These dual-layer DVDs seem very expensive. We are also interested in emulators if its possible to use them on xbox 360.

You cannot run homebrew or emulators on a 360 unless you have a specific software version and know what you are doing. You can only run game backups off of DVDR+DL

Before you even attempt to do a firmware flash, however, you need to do a lot of reading here or there is a good chance you will permanently destroy your 360.
