Bunnie: Important Clarifications: HV Hack Authors, Talk with MS Explanation
Posted by XanTium | May 16 23:56 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Bunnie posted some important clarifications about the article he posted last week on the Xbox360 hacks presentation at the BlueHat Security Briefings in Redmond:
Quote

There are some important misconceptions that need to be corrected.

1. I did no technical work on the Xbox 360 hack. Felix Domke (tmbinc) is the true technical genius behind the hack -- please give him proper credit for his hard work. My role in this is entirely diplomatic; I was consulted because my previous work on the Xbox meant I was already familiar with the legal risks and the best contact methods. And, as with any hack, there were many other unsung heros involved who are forced to choose anonymity due to risks and circumstances out of their control.

2. No money was involved. The hack was reported to Microsoft per legal requirements, and per security industry standard operating practice. It is no coincidence that this is the exact same path that was taken on the first Xbox hacks (Hypertransport, 007 and Dashboard). The difference is that this time, Microsoft took the time to listen, and eventually invited us to their house to give a talk.

3. Finally, this was the opportunity to tell Microsoft that locking out low-level code development (and consequently Linux) will never work. It's neither sound technically nor good for business development in the long term. We believe they have listened. Although this approach has never been tried before, based on their reactions, future Microsoft devices may not lock out homebrew; at least, we have planted the seeds of a feasible technical and business path to such a future in key minds at Microsoft.

In closing, I don't think Microsoft is right in locking down hardware to outside developers; I also don't think that the pirates are right, either. As a result, I must walk a fine gray line, and I am continuously faced with many a difficult and ambiguous decision.

And, to quote Felix, who posted in the comment round on a previous blog entry:
"The reason to stay anonymous so long was...about not getting sued. But after Bluehat, it become clear that this was no issue anymore.
And my strict demand for working on a project like free60 is that i can publish stuff in public, under my real name, without hiding anything, and still be able to sleep well at night. This would not have been possible if we hadn't worked together with Microsoft."

And of course, also credit to Dr. Matrix and Segher, who where all obviously involved. We would be nowhere without their work. Still, I had hoped they would share some of their attained info earlier. We would be much further now if they had and we would have had this hack also way earlier. Progress really takes place when you share research results. It's too bad they've kept everything to themselves, which has slowed down progress a lot.

Still, again, big props to these guys. May we soon have XBMC for everybody smile.gif

We all know very well that they did not tell Microsoft everything they had found.   And once an Exploit was found, you know they didn't tell them that either.  For example,  Back then that exploit was overlooked.  And now it was found.... Keeping info From Microsoft...

These guys know what they are doing.  And since they can get inside the box.  Lots of new things are goi ngto happen as new development, Look at the Xbox1,  every one of them were hacked over time.

The Xbox Rules and you guys do a great job.  The only thing I don't agree with is how far we are now, but the system is new.   And we just watn XBMC on it and for it to run like the xbox plus more.

Thanks guys!

it would be great if they did some kinda of software hack like in xbox 1 where you edited some files and used a bios loader this way we could just get a hard drive and remove it every time we want to play Online (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well i am very happt that ms$ didnt listen the first time anyway. Or did i missunderstood the article when i read that m$ didnt listen on the xbox1? Then they have tried before. If ms had listen we might not had the great hacks on the xbox1 today or not as far developed anyway.
I think its proof that they tried once before that it was there strategy all along to try to contact microsoft and get some kind of offer (job, money etc). and of coz that they would not tell IF they got money from them. I think that they had to sigh a HUUUUGE contract telling them to keep there mouth shut or else ms would sue there asses off. I mean not very good PR for ms if they gave  some hackers money? Guess that would had opend for many others to try.

Microsoft will never officially allow any non-licensed 3rd-party software to take full advantage of their game consoles.

This is the position Microsoft takes when free software is involved. Microsoft never wants to see Linux running on their new baby. It does run on their older child and look how it is abandoned.

As the specialist says , I would have liked it too, if bunnie shared with others what he was working with, I would sure like to have xbmc on 360.  As I'm sure anyone with xbox1 knows , xbmc rocks,  and many would have sold our xbox1's if 360 had xbmc on it.  But if others feel this is the way to go, tell MS everything, I will re lucently go along with it, since many seasoned people here are "cheering these guys on" and saying "way to go".  And my xbox1 is used as Media Center and 360 gathers dust.

Then I have done it better compared to you. I still have multiple Xboxes around for XBMC and I do not own a single Xbox 360. smile.gif

i speak for myself, but who really cares about these guys going off to meet MS, and sucking MS dick ??????     Perhaps when these guys come back with something that benefits the end user directly and not MS, it might be worth reading about. We all know MS doesn`t listen to anyone aprt from themselves.

"As a result, I must walk a fine gray line, and I am continuously faced with many a difficult and ambiguous decision."

Ok so you are going to working for MS and report every exploit out there?

Ok, so MS knows who you are and what you did to their first console... and they have enough money to have the legal powers make your life a living hell - do you cooperate or stick it to the man?  I'm gonna be on cooperate... let the guy live his life - if you're so gung-ho about getting the 360 hacked, pick up some friggin books, learn a little bit, and get crackin... if not, then just back off.

I still don't see how these guys have done anything illegal. If these guys are in the wrong wouldn't everyone wiht a modded xbox or 360 be liable to be sued by M$?
