Half-life Under Debian?
« on: January 22, 2005, 05:34:00 AM »

Yes i have searched this forum and found several topics on getting half-life running in linux. however these all point to gentoox. being the linux dumbass that i am i cannot work out how to do this in xebian. btw i don't have internet access on my xbox, the most i can do is connect my xbox to my pc and ftp without a screen.

i have my orignal half-life disc. i know that i have to install wine, but even that i am unsure of how i would go about doing this. if someone could please point me in the right direction, or even contact me more directly on msn i would really appreciate it. :)

(btw if i can get this working i can just do the same with the other half-life's like blue-shift and opposing forced etc?)

Does Debian have 3D accel drivers yet?
Don't think the FPS will be any good without them.

i don't think any linux distributions have 3d drivers yet. but people have claimed to have got half-life running at 30fps-ish under gentoox in software mode. that would be good enough for me as i used to run it on a crappy p120 at like 5 fps per second

www.winehq.org

I got it running on xebian from source. Its easy to install but to tell the truth, I try to avoid using it. Its but ugly and 3/4 of the progs I've tried didn't work. Then again, I haven't read the setting up wine section.lol

There is the free version of WINE.  There's also WineX which is made for gaming.  The latest release is called Cedega and will cost something like $10 to download and use.

WineX will run HL better than WINE.  There's also a few front-ends to WineX if you like that, but I forget what they're called.

Cadega is the new name and I doubt it will run better, it's geared to 3d accleration

check the tut's thread I bumped it has a guide on installling half life on gentoox a lot of the info will be interchangeable.
