Downsides Of Removing The R6t3?
« on: March 09, 2007, 04:57:00 PM »

Hi,

i'm quite new to the xbox 360 scene (bought my box today) and i read a bit about hacking, flashing etc.
So of course i stumbled upon this new hypervisor exploit thing and i also read it is recomended to remove R6T3.

But my question is, are there any drawbacks of removing that resistor?
I mean besides the risk of boiling the mainboard.

Has anyone already done it?
If i want to downgrade later, do i need to make any other preparations?

By the way the search function doesn't work properly, that makes it quite a bit harder to find information in these forums...

Removing that resistor only prevents the efuses from being blown with the new kernel.  You probably already have kernel 4552 so it wouldn't do anything for you except to prevent future efuses from being blown.

The hypervisor exploits only work with 2 older kernels so far.  Downgrading is also not easy (and impossble if you are already at 4552 witha blown efuse) and requires you to unsolder the flashrom and reprogram it on an external station.

It is the power supply for ALL the efuses.  Removing that resistor will prevent any efuse from being blown.

Do not play newer games on the console, connect to xbox live, or place an upgraded hard drive on teh console... even after removing the resistor since it is currently difficult to downgrade the firmware.

He just told you. If you remove the resistor you will still be updated to the newest kernel when you sign in or pop a brand new game in (that just came out). Removing the resistor only gives you the ability to downgrade back to that kernel at a later time. Once you have the new kernel you will have the ability to downgrade, but it's still not easy.

So...  removing the resister simply prevents the efuses from being blown, and doesn't produce any other complications?  It might be worth doing, as I have the 2858 kernel.

could you remove R6T3 and de-solder the write enable pin of the flash to prevent firmware updates?
