Thats the 6 Million dollar question mate, the answer for the time at least is that modded firmware is okay online but whether MS have the ability just now to check or be able to detect this at all or be able to in the future is anyones guess.  If they are able to detect firmware changes and they do something about its most probably a BAN.

One thing they wont try is reflashing your disk back, com'on if anyone things thats that MS are going to flash peoples console's over the net is just redick, far to risky.

But you have too weight up how much you like playing online compared to offline, LIVE is to good in my opinion.
