How Do You Think M$ Will Go About The Dvd Drive Hacks?
« Reply #15 on: May 25, 2006, 08:26:00 PM »

I think MS knows most of this and will attack this in the long term verses short. They will possibly release an update that will make it more painful and steps to discourage it's use overall. Meanwhile re working hardware to stop this in next production. This will limit the hack to a certain number on the market. Not perfect but probably their best approach.
will they pull this off???

i dont grasp the protection methods in their complexity, but it seems like sony does it well. just glad i got a 1.5 psp.

yea ... i 2nd that. im glad to have a 1.5 psp. one thing is for sure, sony beats all competitors as regards protections methods (cfr drm)

I don't think they'll even bother, here's why....There's about 4mil systems sold, lets figure half Samsung & half Hitachi. Now how many people do you think actually went through with the hack who own a Samsung? Lets now say 1mil did, that's not a lot at all & nothing for MS to get worried about in the long haul with how many they will sell in the systems lifespan IMO. Besides, aren't they supposed to be updating the drives to Lite-On's soon? This will probably be their response to this hack if anything.

Maybe im just hoping for the best for us lucky early adopters, but what im saying does make some sense.

A million is far fetched...

I doubt 10,000 people have gone through with this?

Yea well i just threw that # out there. Who knows what the percentage of Samsung to Hitachi drives are anyways? Its so slim that they could take this lil bump in the road & just add a new drive with shipments in the summer lets say. Even if the Hitachi gets done, its still will be a small percentage due to the tediousness of this hack. Not that i dont appreciate it, just being honest.  smile.gif

i dont think MS can afford a cat and mouse game, they took a loss on xbox1 and this is there attempt at recovering that loss. a cat and mouse game would do them no good, and this is my reasoning: there are only a few ways left that MS could detect this hack (all of which can be defeated the same way we defeated the original check!) so why waste the money releasing 3 or 4 updates that we can just defeat in a matter of days if not hours, when down the road they will run out of checks to perform as we would have defeated them all. the firmware does not allow for MS to change the main authentication scheme or use a new encryption or anything like that. so in the end there is nothing they can do. why waste the money? i bet the new dvd drive coming out is going to contain a signed firmware that cant be modified... also there is no way for MS to do a byte by byte comparison... if they had thought of that then they wouldnt have made this mistake in the first place. i bet there own security on the system will prevent them from fixing this.

Is it even possible to flash a dvd drives firmware from a disc in the dvd drive thats running? If not then theres no way they could put firmware updates on upcomming games. And they couldnt have it copy to HDD first and then flash because they sell 360's with and without the HDD.And they cant force every core owner to buy a HDD either.I mean with all the risk of flashing PC dvd drives I cant see how this is possible with a console that was probably never designed to beable to have its dvd drive flashed.

Interesting point to be sure, but what prevents them copying a new DVD drive FW to RAM, spinning down the DVD drive, flashing, and rebooting? huh.gif

M$ has proven it's willing to update the X360 console's FLASH-based Operating System, updated via XBL, on about a bi-monthly basis - same risk.

Still there are backups of both the kernel and dash stored on the same 360 (probably in case something goes wrong). I doubt they keep a dvd firmware backup also (unless it's coming with the dashupdate too ofcourse  smile.gif ).

i´ve been playing with fire this two past days...

i bought a 360 which im enjoying very very much.

i bought the games...and i did the firmware thing...

the thing i´ve learned its that the live update only
happens when you turn on the console and sign in
...but not while online. (correct me if im wrong)

because... i did the hack...
then i log into xbox live...
it updated the firmware
and i could still read backups...

and i have to say... i would be pissed if they´ll ban
me from xbox live... also i dont think they´ll do it..

the thing they will do its re-flash the firmware not
allowing you to play backups...

leaving your xbl account untouched...

please, we all know MS needs to beat ps3.

Correct me if I'm wrong but maybe because the new update isn't out? Hehe Seriously, if the games are good I think they diserve the money, specially if you have a stable online platform, like Xbox Live is.

Think the games are expensive? You can always buy them used and just sell them after for about the same price. Beats renting! smile.gif That's just my 2 cents and probably so many people have gone down this road and got flamed rolleyes.gif

well sorry if this is kinda off topic but I had the "Oblivion" loading problem where it took like 20 min to load with the HD on and I had to press and hold the A button to dump the cache

well anyway this didnt work for me so I returned it to Best Buy and got a nother one

but it got me thinking what if what was happening when it took 20 min or longer to load was it was caching the whole game the the HD because of some glitch in the early consoles it would only do this with the HD on not the MU

waht I am saying is this happen on a verry small % of consoles even the first ones that came out in Nov. that my friends had some had this problem and some didnt this could be something that was overlooked as a way "into" the 360

I am not a hacker but I have modded 30-35 XBOX 1 and am fimliar with the processes

if I have no idea what I am saying (I know people will post and say) then sorry for wasting your time but maybe it was overlooked by the hackers (with their minds on other hacks then those consoles were gone from the stores)

I thought it was worth a post

Gamespot reports the new update has been released today. I'm gonna snag it and see what features they've added. I heard 125 new enhancements to the system...
