How Do You Think M$ Will Go About The Dvd Drive Hacks?

Any speculation as to how you think they'll go about this? Do you think via an update they can scan the DVD drive firmware for the hacked code, and brick your 360... or is M$ shitting bricks worried about this issue?

I think M$ would be taking it a step too far by bricking your 360. I dont think theyd be too worried about it, since the FW hack is fairly involved aswell as burning the games and there are only a few people that actually do it. Theyre probly saving there big guns (brikking your 360) for when we run unsigned code lol.

M$ simply do a hash check on the DVD firmware, and if it isnt correct, viola youll be banned off XBL.

As someone else previously noted, backups are *not* identical to originals of course, so you wouldn't even need to read the firmware.  Simply scanning the disc and looking in the spot the hacked firmware puts the special sectors will tell MS everything they need to know about a backup.

Still we could afterwards locate the check and let the dvd firmware produce a valid response (cat and mouse game)

I don't think MS$ wants to get in the business of complicated disc scans before launching games, etc... I would be shocked if they ever tried to flash drive firmware as well. I am guessing they will add a routine to the dashboard startup sequence to do some sort of integrity test, and if you fail you will be flagged for banning on live. That is it.

I don't see them being able to change the new games to not work with the hack either. They still have to support the existing consoles, so they can't just go to a different format of disc authentication (or even alter it very much).

It will be "cat and mouse", and they know it. That is why my prediction is that they will have slow-moving planned attacks, that will cause problems for weeks/months, instead of constant lame attacks that will only annoy us for a day. That is why we haven't seen anything yet... They could have thrown something lame at us, but they are obviously trying to do more than annoy us...

I hope they take a lesson from sonys PSP debacle and realize its going to be a "cat and mouse" game if they continually release updates on the newest games to come out. Id hate to see it degenerate into something like that because no one wins.

psp hasnt been hacked since 2.00 (which leads to 2.01 up to 2.7, even though 2.6 can run some homebrew)... which sucks for alot of people... either the psp hacking scene isnt up to par with the vast xbox hacking scene or psp just trumps MS in protection.

i dont grasp the protection methods in their complexity, but it seems like sony does it well. just glad i got a 1.5 psp.

Still you can count on it that they will fix it in the next hardware revision and that those xboxes gonna take a long time before they gonna be hacked. If you plan on buying an xbox and make use of the fw hack then you better buy it asap. They won't leave this hole open forever.

I'm seriously asking - if you put the sig and MD5 of hacked firmware the same as the original - HOW are M$ gonna detect it?

By reading the complete firmware into RAM, then do a bit by bit comparison. If you can dump the firmware from your drive then so can Microzoft.

would it not be possible to edit the firmware and change where it looks on the disk for the ss? so everone would have fairly random  ss locations on the disk

may even be a way that the pirates could make it so people have to buy there games from them  dry.gif

Ok you guys need to learn a little more about SECURITY SECTORS!

These are pre-determined reserved blocks that M$ can use - when a developer builds a game they have to conform to a DVD layout structure - this is for speed of loading/streaming etc. There are RESERVED ranges for these so called SECURITY SECTORS.

If I make a 1:1 backup of a game - and M$ check for these SECURITY SECTORS guess what! YES. They will be the same.

So I find that argument doesn't carry any weight.

Now there is a good check they could use - but don't want to post it, case it gives them a good idea  grr.gif

Also to the person who said a 'bit to bit' comparison of the firmware? You really think M$ are gonna risk 5million Xbox's by flashing firmware and doing all kinds of stupid things - I dont think so - what happens if they got it wrong? AND there are several revisions of drive! NO WAY that would be MADNESS...

I think they'll check the 'sig' of the firmware - if it matches 1 of theirs then they'll be happy

But this is just suppostition - have to wait till the 'Live' update...

Need someone to be a guinea pig and set up an regulary updated site, stating the date of the xbl update and whether it is safe to accept or not. Whenever a modded user is told to update the system, check this site to see if the guinea pigs machine is still working. If it isnt, do not accept until updated firmware is installed on 360...
