Playing Back Ups = No Drive Noise!
« on: May 22, 2006, 11:40:00 PM »

When playing original games my 360 sounds like a F-16 at take off. But with back ups there is hardly any noise from the drive spinning. Anybody else notice this pleasant surprise? I only have one game PDZ so I can't comment on any others but I hope they're the same.

Yes, as I copied my Oblivion last night I noticed that, I put the backup in and made sure it worked (which hummed very softly), then I put the org back in to make sure my orginals still work. As soon as the drive closes "we're ready for takeoff" again. I swear this alone is worth the the hack, I can't stand how loud the originals are anymore after hearing the backups running 1/10 as loud.

I agree with Spark...

If there is less noise it means that the disks are not spinning as fast.

The reason a drive scales down the speed is because of readability issues.

In the long run these burned disks may be harder to read and may be putting a strain on the drive electronics and laser...

Then again... since you are only making backups in case your original gets damaged it is not a problem.  Because you wouldn't be running backups constantly..

Fair point.

Seriously though lads, I'd be careful with this one, I know those drives make a fucking racket (and if you think Samsungs are loud, you should check a Hitatchi out), but the fact that every 360 makes those noises off the shelf means that they were obviously meant to do it.

On a related topic though, are 360 drives noisy when running dvd video ? Because if they're not, considering that recordable dl media is designed pretty much for that purpose alone, it could partially explain this.

It's been claimed multiple times a DVD video spins a lot slower then a game disc resulting in a more quiet drive. So maybe the 360 doesn't fully recognize the disc as a gamedisc and doesn't allow the same spin rate which might result in faulty gameplay and/or longer loading times.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the apprehension that DVD Video went at 1x, where as the data transfer speed on games should be 12x for this console, so if these guys are getting problems with skipping fmv/music and slow loading times on Ritek dvd+r dl burned at 2.4, then like you say this might be what's causing the issue.

Unfortunately, if that is the case, and it would make sense if it was, then these discs will inevitably do the drive in, in the same way that CD rips burn out PS2 lasers, and DC's suffered from constant use of bootable CDRs.

One thing to point out though is that on the one occasion that I used the kiosk disc in my 360, it was anything but fucking quiet, so if this is an issue, then it's an issue that only affects dual layer media.

to me, the "no noise" thread sounds, that the drive has problems reading the disc. So it runs slower with maybe higher laser power. Which means, the 360 drive wears out faster.
just a thought

Well I put a dl dvd+r video in my hitatchi earlier and it just loaded like a dvd player would, where as when you put a 360 game in, the drives speed increases after the drive has checked it. If these backups aren't doing that, then they're not running as they should.

I kind of thought this might be too good to be true, but it's hard to go back to using the original disk after using the back up b/c of the difference is noise. I'm surprised there aren't ore comments about this the difference was dramatic. I ripped using wxripper I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I did this more for the sake of curiosity than anything but am tempted to keep the firmware as is because of the noise benefit but I'm concerned with the cost to the drive.

Unfortunately hacking is risky.. you void your warranty.. have the possibility of being banned on live.  (Mind you.. even if you dont use live now, any new game can detect a different DVD Rom bios and flag your machine), and may be damaging your drive...

Nothing comes without a cost.. look at all the people that bricked their machines already.. wait until a LG hack comes out and you will have 2X the number of bricks..

There is a difference in 'pressed' media and rewriteable media.

I would expect the latter to sound quieter - it's made to different tolerances and yes - it might spin slower - but people are still playing games fine.

How long do you expect the laser to last anyway? The console will be obsolete in 3 years - I'm sure it'll make it till then  tongue.gif

If not somebody will cash in on selling 'spare' drives... so overall no big concern...

Why's everybody panicking so much? Can't ever remember this level of hysteria back in the PS1 and PS2 days? The whole world has gone wimpy and whiny!
