Gentoox Magig Running For 24 Hours
« on: October 08, 2004, 01:45:00 PM »

I have GentooX Home version 3.0c, and yes, it's been awhile since I ran Magic. Basically, I did not want to blow away my F drive GentooX and install the new version 3.1 from scratch remembering the hoops I had to jump through to get my Xerox network printer working. An accomplishment I am very proud of, BTW

So, the running of Magic decision was made about this time yesterday. I entered "yes" to do I want KDE? do I want XFCE? etc.

Step 1 of 34 took about 4 hours all by itself. A watched pot never boils, so I watched some TV (those ladies on "The Apprentice" are really something!) then went to bed.

It's compiling/merging KDE base now. And compiling, and compiling. Is this normal? Should I go on vacation? I hear St. Maarten is nice this time of year :-)

its normal. your compling alot of updates as well as a new version of kde. also recompiling the kernel. that stuff takes time. but the updates are well worth it.

Well after three days of compiling, I finally pulled the plug on GentooX "Magic".

ShallaX was quoted on some article saying that we should think of "Magic" as Windows Update for GentooX.  What a laugh!

It seems the only way that ShallaX can approach Bill Gates is by way of his arrogance, given his response to this same question on his way-less-than-useful forum.  No wonder Friendtech blew him off!

If you want something that installs a lot quicker and runs just as well get Xebian. The reason it takes so long is because everything is being compiled from source and to compile software quickly you need a fast processor...and the xbox does not have that.Xebian is all in binary form so it only takes around 20 minutes to install. Also try getting rid of bload like kde, gnome etc this sort of stuff takes up a great amount of the compiling time.
