Are The Ss.bin Unique For Each Dvd-rom?
« on: May 16, 2006, 02:39:00 PM »

They are not unique to the DVD, they are only tied to the game release i.e. PAL version of GRAW and NTSC version of GRAW are different.  But all PAL GRAW's are the same.

this was supposed to be an edit for previous post, but was to slow i guess.

I just read about the hitachi drive, that the release of the firmware for that hopefully will make it region free.
I thought that the region of the xbox360 was determined by something closer to the core of the xbox360.
If not, couldnt one flash their samsung drive with any regions fw then and play games for that region instead?

I suppose that the 360 must read the region from the disc so if the dvd firmware intercepts and changes this then it would be possible.

I suppose that the 360 must read the region from the disc so if the dvd firmware intercepts and changes this then it would be possible.

The flags that dictate the regions an XEX is allowed to execute in are contained within the header of every XEX file.  DVD FW will not be able to intercept and change the XEX region code without also resigning the XEX.  And if we knew how to resign XEX's, we wouldn't need the DVD FW hack (we'd simply sign the XEXs to work from DVD-Rs  rolleyes.gif ).

However, something may be able to be done for region locked DVD-Videos, as their region locking is very well understood (forcing all DVD-Videos to appear as region 0 (all regions) for example.).
