8 Port Switch?
« on: June 26, 2004, 03:40:00 PM »

Is it possible to use a 8 port switch for connectiong xbox, pc and cable modem?
I have it set up right now as the modem is port1 the pc is port2 and the xbox is port3. But I cannot get access to the xbox via flashxp. Both the pc and modem are fine though and pc and modem are using a patch cable and xbox is x-over. I can gain access fine by connection xbox-pc directly.

if you are using the same cable to connect the xbox and pc ...... to connect the xbox and
hub........ Then THAT is why you are having a problem ..... you cant connect the xbox to
the hub using a crossover cable ........try another cable ....one thats NOT a crossover.

the switch should have auto-sensing ports so your cable should be fine. its probably something with your config.

auto sensing ports? really?  I'm pretty sure with the cheap switches i've used the only way to overcome that is to chuck a crossover into the uplink port to turn it back to a straight though cable.

Also check network settings (IP address/subnet) as youre modem may be assigning IP addresses.

To see if the cable will work, see if you have a link light on both the xbox NIC and the switch.  if so, it's fine.

post your IP addres, netmask, and gateway for your PC and your Xbox.

auto MDIX (automatically working with either straight or cross cables) is standard on all gigabit ethernet as it is part of the 802.3 standard.  On 10/100 ports this technology hit the open market only two or so years ago.  Most low end switches do not have this feature as it would cost more for the chips.  All high end switches on the market are incorporating this feature though.

I checked both lights on the NIC xbox and the switch and the one on xbox has green and orange lights and the switch is green just like the other ones. Now whats the deal w/ all the crossover cable and patch cable which one do I need? I see others saying one is wrong and the other is wrong, I tried both now and same thing each time. The settings on my XBOX are correct and on my PC I have obtain IP and DNS automatically.

the green LED indicates link, while the orange one indicates activity, thus your box is registering activity at the port (either incoming or outgoing) and has a link.
I would say there is a config issue of some sort.

On my switch, I have my modem, PC, and three xboxs, two upstairs and one downstairs.  On of the xboxs upstairs is connected through a crossover, and it works just as good as the other cables.  I only paid $16 for my 5 port switch, inc. shipping, so it's not really a matter of price.

The only thing I had to do to FTP into them through the switch was not use a static IP address.  I didn't have to change any other settings.

When you did this you lost internet connection right?

I want to be able to use internet and use XBOXCONNECT at the same time..

not literally, i ment if you dont have another streight through cable, temperarily take out the one connecting the modem and the switch, and use it to connect the xbox to the switch
