ok, i've gotten a new HDD, and it will be sat night before i can do any more testing.  this time, i'm going to manually extract and import the files onto the new HDD instead of doing the restore function.. laugh.gif   i'll let everyone know when i get it done.

oh, by the way, i'm still alive, but she was pissed. cool.gif

Take an image backup of the new drive first - zip it, and store in a very safe place. wink.gif

yeah, learned my lesson the hardway.

ok, here's what i learned...  i took the image of my original HDD, and extracted all the folders and then imported them into the 2nd HDD.  same thing happens as moving the HDD.  so there isn't any file on the HDD that makes it unlock, so here's what i'm thinking, but i don't know enough to check this.  either the game is encripted with the serial number of the console, or there is a file that all games look for that has the serial number and then the program checks that...

if someone knows enough about HEX to check the difference, i can provide you with a copy of a game that works on my end that you might have also, and then compair them to see if the serial number is in the code.  now here's where my experience completely runs out, and maybe someon can fill in the blanks, but if the serial number is embeded into the game, are the arcade games signed also to where we can't change the S/N number in the file and it play with breaking the signature?

Got wonderful news for you, sport! There's no need to back up your Arcade games, because the Xbox Live account that purchased the games can always redownload them. So if your hard drive crashes or you lose your MU, there's no need to worry... you can just log into Live and get your Arcade games back.

That's great, isn't it? I bet you're very relieved that you don't need to bother making backups of your games.

Unless, of course, by "back up" you meant "steal." But that couldn't be the case, could it?

i don't mean to be harsh, but did you listen to what I said?  here's a repeat of my test.

QUOTE
i had the same thought, and here's what i found out... it's linked to the actual system. here's how i found this out.

1st test. the system knows what gamers tags were on the system... my mom has a silver account, so i recovered her account on my 360 and d/l a game under my gamerstag.... i was able to play the game on my xbox under my name or her's. i then moved my tag, her's, and the game to a mem card, took it to her house, and only my tag was able to play it, but i had to be signed into xbox to play it.

2nd test. this is when i got my 360. i have two gamer tags on my xbox, mine and my fiencee's. on my original 360, both of us can play any games (games that were bought under my profile and under her's). during some testing, i took the original HDD and put it on my new HDD. on the new 360 i could only play the games that i bought on my name only when i was signed into live. I could not play the ganmes she bought, and she couldn't play the ones i bought. one more thing, I formatted the HDD of the new 360, and it asks for the serial number of the xbox. so aparently when you format the drive, it links it to the 360 it's hooked to.

conclusion: arcade games are both linked to the serial number of the 360 that originally d/l it, AND it's linked to the gamer's tag. on my new 360, i can play the games she bought, but i have to sign in BOTH of our profiles for me to play the full games she's bought and so forth

myself personally, I don't want to "STEAL" the live games.  if this is hacked so you can get on the web and download it so I don't have to pay, I will pass.    so let me spell this out...  i have two 360's with two different gamerstags.  one is mine, and one is my fiencee's.  I have all the games that i have bought on both boxes.  under my gamer's tag, i have downloaded geo wars, feeding frenzy, and joust.  under her name she has bankshot billiards 2, marble blast ultra, and mutant store reloaded.  on my second xbox (the one that the games were not originally downloaded to) i can ONLY play the games that I downloaded under my name...  if i try to play bankshot billiards, it gives me the TRIAL.  now, on my original xbox (the one that the games were originally downloaded to) I can play all the games that are on there WITHOUT the trial game message.  Now, on to WHY I want to crack this...  there are sometimes that I want to play a game in the bedroom, but some of the games I can't.  I really don't want to buy the games twice.  I am a firm believer in if a game is worth playing, it's worth buying.  It's like the DVD FW hack, I am interested in it for one reason and one reason only.....  so that my girl and I can both play the same game without having to spend over $100 so we can both play it.

If this security is hacked with the arcade games, what people do with the knowledge is their own business.  My self personall, if I see a copy of Zuma (which I don't have) on the web that is the full game, I WON'T d/l it and STEAL it.  I will buy it.  This is my version of FAIR USE.

I didn't mean to flame, or be rude if I have been, but I can't stand it when people don't read the posts and automatically assume that I am wanting to steal games.  so, if you are still thinking I am STEALING games, you can go take your frame of mind and place it else where except to berate me.  okay pumpkin?

Use of quoting can avoid such confusion.

My message was intended for kingla, the original poster, not you. I suspect his intentions aren't as honorable as yours. Nevertheless, I apologize if I gave offense. It's the use of "backups" that set me off... I'm heartily sick of software pirates pretending to be merely "backing up" their legitimately-owned titles. As if one user in a thousand even bothers backing up his PC software, let alone his console games. As if anybody ever in the history of console gaming ever hacked a console so that he could "back up" his software. It's one thing to be a thief, it's something lower to be a thief who doesn't even have the nads to admit it.

ok, then i retract my previous statement.

so back to topic at hand, does anyone know much about readhing hex and can look into this?

Wind your neck in, mate! I own many imported Japanese rarities on PS1 and PS2, and XBox. I own legitimate versions of them all, and I do indeed back them up, because I don't want to scratch the games that I may not be able to get again.

for the record i mean backing up yes i have two xboxs that i want it working on but also i only signed up to xbox live for 1 month so i could download arcade games and demos so if anything does go wrong i dont want to have to pay again for xbox live just to download arcade games ive already paid for ! And i do image all driver and software cd's in case they get lost or scrached and i ghost my hard drive every 6 months or so backups are important thats why many bussinesses spend thousands of dollars on servers to do so...

And I too backed up all of my discs after my Halo got wiped out by the kids, and that makes two of us from one small town in England, so guess it might be more than he thinks!

Haha, that coincidence is really quite amusing. I'm not that careful with discs when I'm in the middle of a full-blown gaming session, so I've been backing up all my favourites since I scratched several PS1 RPGs to beyond the point where they could be played.  These days, if the game is one I enjoy, the original never touches my consoles more than a half-dozen times.

if you have the 360 i hope you know that you didn't have to signup and pay for xbox live just for the arcade games and the marketplace...   you can sign up for a silver account for free and not pay for it...

ok guys we have gotten a little off subject, does anyone know how to compair the hex between two different games to see if they are the same?  and does anyone know if the arcade games are signed?
