Thespecialist Statement: 360 Firmware Hack Soon
« Reply #45 on: March 16, 2006, 09:25:00 AM »

Where do people get their facts from?  Recording artists almost always lose their ass on their CD's because the recording companies require they sell 'x' amount of companies before they the artist gets paid, and if they don't sell 'x' copies the artist is on the hook for the dollar difference to produce the CD.

Recording artists make their money touring.   Why do people think all these Evergreen acts tour, and don't make a CD?  Because the money is in touring for the bands.

MS got a lot of free market research from hackers to make the 360.   However, piracy still hurts the companies.   If a software company would offer me a $5 replacement game dvd when mine becomes unplayable, I would not even consider opening my 360 up.   I just want to play backups of games I own, period, so I don't lose my license if the media goes bad.  That is the real crime in this.  If the box eats my DVD I am forced to pay $50-$60 to replace it.

Oh....and you should never have to buy a game first before you try it.  Game rentals are the way to go.  Try it before you buy it.

Why did MS let all of their windows software be copied freely up until windows XP???  even though I remember many other programs that were much harder to share. requiring special patches etc. ?

If MS had hardcore copy protection like it does now, do you think that MS would be where they are today?, IMO - Hell No!  by letting people share it was like free advertising,  they let 75% of the world install it and learn how to use it then MAKE them pay for it.

If you have an xbox 360 in the first place that says something about your income level - unless it was a gift or something. games on ebay are %30 off which is quite affordable, now IMO buying a used game on ebay is not much different than stealing one, how much of your money that you spent goes to MS ?

MS should know by now that it is all about getting your name out there, why does pepsi pay enormous ammounts of money to have a movie star hold a can during a movie?

If the box gets modded it can be a good thing --- here is why- People will buy an xbox that they normally would not even purchase in the first place because they would not be able to afford games for it in the first place, which will raise console sale numbers which looks good for investors, plus the family relative that is not a techno geek and would never mess with backups and comes over and plays your 360 and goes out and buys one.  If mp3's were never stealable / free trade ,  would MP3's and Player sales be where they are now?

The biggest trick is , dont make it too easy  cool.gif

All of the "l33t h@X0rs" on here condoning piracy obviously never had any of their creative works stolen, or anything stolen from them for that matter. Come talk when you've had something you've poured years of your own time creating and developing, only to have some lazy cheap punk boost it from you. Trust me, the feeling sucks.

That being said, I do think that $60 is a bit much to be asking for a game.

As long as this firmware hack will not allow backups on Live, I'm all for it. Backups on Live opens a door to cheating, which would ruin the service IMHO. Play a round of Ghost Recon2 on Xlink where you empty a clip into someone point blank, they just stand there, pull out a pistol and one shot in the ankle kills you.

why don't you guys drop the piracy talk. We do not support it in any way regardless what people may or may not consider justified. Read the forum rules if you do not understand this.

But they were still payed for that disk if you d-load it they were not, that's some bad logic there.

No mater how you look at it stealing is stealing. To the folk's who think that it's ok because there only taking a copy and not the real product get your head out of your ass that's still $50/$60 that dosent go to making more games.

People, developers deserve your money, if you beleive its a good game and they've put a lot of effort into it.
However at the rate my friends xbox 360 has been eating cds and the fact that they basicly force you to play xbox live (the lack of games able to do splitscreen 4 player even though the box says 2-14 muilt.) its very very upsetting. I personally would love to be able to legitly back up the games that i have paid for!!! Why do i have to pay 60 dollars for a new call of duty game when the xbox eats it up. Also i do agree that if the game is good you should pay for it. A great example is oblivion coming out in 5 days. This game was in dev for many years and is going to be awsome the fact that people WILL rip off the developers is sad. (on the pc off course)

i am a little confused here, any clarification would be appreciated. if the firmware was hacked, the drive would always report back a "passed media check" (saying that the .xex was being run from a pressed disc), but the game data still couldnt be modified in any way due to the signature, right? if so, then there isnt much to worry about as far as any live cheating, correct?

uhm no....the xex files are signed. not the gamedata. however some gamedata could be checksummed by the signed xex but that is not usually the case.

we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I think it's in MS's best interest to keep cheaters off live and they will strike with forcefull mathers....
