Extracting Pgr3 Photomode Pics
« on: February 13, 2006, 03:05:00 PM »

after some playing around this morning, i have successfully extracted the PGR3 photomode pictures..

the pics are stored as normal 1280x720 jpegs inside your profile...

extract the PGR3 profile.sav from your harddrive/memory card, from the 4D5307D1 titleid folder..

pop it open in a hex editor.. the pics are always at the end of the file.... they start with the standard jpeg header of FFD8FFE000104A464946 and end with FFD9 then a bunch of 000's for padding...

you can see some sample images i extracted over at http://www.360gamesaves.com/

for some reason, some pictures come out corrupted.. "unable to draw" is the error in windows preview, even tho it gets the resolution right in the properties.. still working it out with those pics.. if you open them in photoshop, it reports it as corrupted but will still open them.. they look strange, and have corruption in the image, the yellow corvette picture at 360gamesaves is one of the ones that did that, for the bottom 100 pixels or so, it took a part from the middle of the image and had it duplicated at the bottom.. so i just cropped it..

Awesome, Cool boy.  But, how do you extract them from a Hex editor?

start at FFD8FFE000104A464946, copy all the way down to the end FFD9, file, new, paste, and save as a jpg

heres an example of a corrupted image that i extracted...

IPB Image

maybe someone can figure it out...

for some reason there is a big block of 00's in the middle of the file, not present in other images i extracted.. then theres a line of data in the middle of it, and it continues on with 00's untill the main data picks back up...

when i removed the 00's and left the middle line, the colors went back to normal on the bottom half, but it was still misaligned and some corruption still existed...

when i removed it all, including the middle line, the alignment went to normal, and the color was still pink..

if someone wants to play with it to see if they can get it right, save the image above, it is an untouched hex dump of the picture

Well I don't know all that much but I think the replays are stored as movements on the controller.
Ex. pretty much a huge notepad document that records EVERY single movement made on the controller then when going to replay, it places your car in the exact spot and pretty much plays the game for you with different camera views.

I think this because GT3-4 replays were around 51kbs which is way to small for an actual video file.

You can always plug your 360 into capture devices, but of course they have to be nice ones.

EDIT-Sniper, I don't look at hex or even know that much about jpeg files but is their a chance their was another FFD9 in the file? Maybe their was two in the picture file and you cut it off early which leads to the distortion? I say that because the files sizes are 210 and 410kbs in size but I also know jpegs can vary in size even though the same resolution.

Just noticed the mcdonald one ends in d900 where the other is FFD9

Btw Sniperkilla in this pic

IPB Image

the building right above the windshield has a "cutout" facade where the black part is supposed to be transparent/alpha. Same for the smaller ones. Just a tell-tale sign of a slight rushjob when nobody noticed the textures are missing their alpha on that building.

But man, if they had delayed it a few months it could look like that ingame (I mean superb AA and native 1280x720 instead of 2XAA and 1024x600). Oh well PGR4 should fix it.

well it seems WinHex can automatically extract the .jpgs from the profile.sav

just open it in winhex.. go to tools, disk tools, file recovery by type, set it to JPG.. and let it run loose.. works great..

need a "full" version of winhex tho
