When the xbox is looking for something from the drive, say a serial number, the emulator would allow the info to pass through. When the xbox says what is in the drive, the emulator could pass through. When it came time to execute, the emulator could take over. Again, I am no expert, this is all fantasy and speculation. With a raw dump on our hands, an emulator inbetween, why would the xbox know any diffrent.
I thought of this very same idea last night after I posted about the ISO extraction issue, and the guys that were modifying their firmware to read the new discs on a PC.
What I came up with, but I am not sure if there is such a solution readily available, that could be easily modified to suit... What you need is some kind of SATA debug kit, that will sit on the SATA bus and be able to dump every single I/O operation that goes down the bus. I assume that someone with the right hardware could snoop on everything that passes between the drive and 360.
The problem with this approach is that it would mean you can't run anything but copies of games, and personally I am not that interested in being able to backup games, it harms the industry and means that an XBOX 720 is less likely due to losses. Backing up games has it's pros, like being able to play instantly without having to go find the DVD, and protection against scratches, which on the XBOX 360 seems like a big initial concern!! The solution would mean that only signed stuff will work, so it's a halfway house.
