Wine Vs. Winex
« on: August 01, 2004, 01:52:00 PM »

I'm curious as too what the results are. I just installed gentoox and I am new to linux. I really want to give Half-Life a spin.

Also, is there a way to set up the controller so that it can work in a game ? has anyone mapped the controller to keyboard functions. buttons ?

you want have fun even if it runs. there's no 3d driver for xbox linux yet. so the game would be really slow.

on my desktop i have wine, winex (now called cedega) and crossover office. mostly one of them works for every app, game or whatever i throw at it.

I've played Half-Life on my mac in virtual pc in software mode, and it was slow, alittle to slow to be playable.

I want to play the story mode, no multiplayer. No CS!

My imac is 450 mhz.... I would imagine once i get it set-up I will have fun with Half-life. I read in another thread that someone got it working, but there are really no details.

I am thinking about subscribing to winex, but i was looking too see if anyone had experience with using both for playing games in software mode.

as long as i can get a half-decent framerate playing the story mode i will be happy.

i am getting a usb adaptor, but i was wondering if anyone knew how i could map the controller buttons as keyboard keys?

you can definately run half-life with winex without any modifications. i don't know if the ram is enough because there's not much left when linux loads the x server and a window manager on top of it. you could always delete xfce and only start the x server. this should give you about 30 mb of ram. maybe more. but how good it runs i can't tell.

edit: for your imac it should work. 450 mhz is ok and i guess you have at least 128 mb ram.

yeah that is what I was thinking, booting from a script file or somthing with now windows manager etc.

I was running it on my mac in a emulator, which is much much slower then running it.

I just wish people would offer tips and solutions like yours.

to many people are so quick to say "it will not work" before they think about it. the game does have software rendering, you do not need a 3d card to play this...

here are the min system requirements:

Minimum Requirements:
P133
24 MB RAM
SVGA
2x CD-ROM

anyways, i will get this working, and i will post a screenshot when i do. and it sounds like someone else did:

chuddy117-That was probably me, I have run half life using winex. I was only playing alone, no bots or anyone else. It ran surprisingly well. I'm not saying you'll be able to play with anyone else. But it was a cool proof of concept anyway!

I bet if we all work together we could get this running quite well !
