I've found a Linux Video4Linux WinTV-PVR-USB2 driver at http://justiceforall...fr/pvrusb2.html that could possibly make the USB PVR device that Cykiller and Shalax described posible on the Friendtech MCE.

However, this driver was compiled for kernel 2.6 and the latest Xbox kernel is 2.4.  There is hope though.  First, I was told it wouldn't be very difficult to recompile this driver for a different kernel.  Unfortunately, I'm no developer, and I have no idea how one would do this.  Secondly, the main problem with the Xbox and kernel 2.6 is the incompatibility of the FATX filesystem.  This wouldn't be a problem for MCE as it will run on a native Linux filesystem.

I also wanted to know, could I theoretically install Linux using the MechAssault installation (so I could still play Xbox games), install mythtv-xbox and this driver once it's been recompiled for the 2.4 kernel?  I want to make my Xbox a solo PVR (no hook up to another computer), but I still want to play Xbox games.  The old saying "You can't eat your cake and have it to" may be appropriate here.*

I hope my ideas help developers create the Xbox-PVR.  If they don't, I would like to know why they wouldn't work.

*I really hate that saying.  Who the heck just stands around with a piece of cake in their hand?  If you have cake, it's inevitable that it will be eaten.

QUOTE
For people who want to keep things legal and use their Xbox as a media center and PC, there is no other alternative.  XBMC doesnt have dvd ripping which can be run in the background whilst doing other things.

OK, so according to you everyone who backs up a game to their HD is a warez kiddie breaking the law, but your 'legal' media center features DVD ripping - the difference being???? Both were legal last time I checked under US copyright law.

Either way it isn't an excuse for taking up the entire F drive.  I'll be sticking with XBMC myself.
