Shallax, you know from the past that I have very much respect for you.  But I cannot say that I agree with the route you are taking with Friendtech Media Center.  Let me remind you of something: you have always supported hacked bios in the past, by releasing an xbe that can be launched with either the use of a hacked bios on a modchip, or an exploit.  There is only one thing that I believe could have changed your mind on this matter.  This is your affiliation with Friendtech.  Don't try to tell me that you aren't getting paid for what you are doing.  It is most obvious by the fact that you have attached Friendtech's name to this product.  Because they do not want to be accused of inducing hacking through the sales of a product with a modchip built in, they have asked you to make it a native install.  Get a grip man... they KNOW who they are selling their upgraded Xboxes to.  And although you may have turned idealistic, you can in no way convince me of the fact that Friendtech has a target audience of people who would like to install only Linux on their Xbox.  I would like to request that you rethink your position on this topic, as I suspect you are considering taking this route with Gentoox.  If you do, you will lose the respect and admiration of the Xbox Scene, and that your wallet will only become fatter from your affiliation with Friendtech.  Expect those donations that you keep talking about to trickle down to a minimum.  People will not appreciate this at all.

i see nothing wrong with him making money, if that is the case. but i like this app, its just too bad u have to lose your whole f drive. (even though the only thing on it is xbmc and a few other apps).  maybe a smaller toned down version would be better for the "scene". i really think this could be a great rival to xbmc.

I totally agree... but Shallax seems to be totally against releasing that sort of a version.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but if MCE is simply a modified version of Cromwell(GPL), booting into a stripped down version of GentooX, and running a modified version of MythTv(GPL), then wouldn't it be a relatively simple matter to modify the code to stop it messing with the G partition?

After all if it's being done by the book MCE itself will be GPL therefore you'll be releasing the code?

Please corect me if I'm wrong. Not trying to cause a problem just interested in any problems which may pop up because of this line of reasoning.

I seriously hope so.  Especially if Shallax is against a non native root fs.  I would be totally for this.  Also, I'm sure the Xbox-Linux group would be for this, as they probably look down upon Shallax for his affiliation with a company.

The mirror you've selected, telia.dl.sourceforge.net does not currently have the file you requested. (This is an error on our part which will be fixed).

You are requesting file: /xbox-linux/Friendtech.Media-Center.BETA4.rar
Please select a mirror

Edit : I dont want it anymore , it sucks. Will stick to XBMC which doesnt requiere Format change.  dry.gif

* MCE formats your F: drive COMPLETELY to a Linux recognisable format - it will no longer be FatX and you will no longer be able to backup games to it. If you have anything on F:, BACK IT UP FIRST! The decision to make it Linux Native was based on two factors, legality and speed. Native filesystems are faster than loopbacks and if you are using your Xbox legally, you have no need for F: to be accessible by your standard Xbox software.
* Gentoox will require 3.5-4.5GB of space on E: depending on whether you choose "Home" or "Pro" respectively.

Don't bother with Gentoox FriendTech MCE.... It is slow.... ya ya ya I know it was not meant to run on a standard xbox.... and not everyone has a DreamX.  XBMC is ten times better that Gentoox FriendTech MCE.  I relize this is beta.  MCE has a long way to go before it will ever be in XBMCs league.

you wiped your F:\ drive to try it out? how silly

Wait... I'm starting to understand what's going on here. Friendtech wants to (has to) release this because of linux licensing.   So they make it run slow (and only natively) on a normal xbox.  Its supposed to make us want to buy a DreamX.  We're not suckers, you know.

too bad it formats my hdd and stops me from using backups or else i would use it. Good work nevertheless and don't mind what the others say cause the app looks good and its actually legal.

Just curious why it has to be an upgraded HD and being incompatible with other Xbox backup usage.

It is by all means possible to just use a stock HD(though little space for Divx files) or an upgraded HD with a shared F: so both linux and Xbox apps can use.

Seems like a decision to help to sell the hardware ?

I am doing the equivalent using Freevo(well tried Mythtv but don't like it) + xine/mplayer/mencoder etc. on a stocked HD. Will try TV capture when I can put a hand on the device(Wintv USB).

It's nice to see people doing it for themselves.

So what if it was done to sell hardware, they give it free to the community but design it in mind for there end product. Friendtec is a company you know they are their to make money not give it away. I don't understand a lot of hostility's within the community about people making money out of the community, it's called business.

If you do get the TV capture working it would nice if you could post in these forums (And Gentoox's own forum).

When you created you system did you start with gentoox pro or home edition?

I started from a standard debian woody from debootstrap(didn't have a burner so none of the dist works for me and not interested in download hundreds of MB).

Would let everyone knows the progress about TV capture. I have been thinking about this for a long time but there is one dangling issue that stops me from doing it, audio in. That TV capture device output analog audio which is a none-issue on PC but there is no such thing on Xbox.

It is possible to buy a USB based audio device but that means more $$$ and I won't put in any unless it is abosolutely needed. The device driver may have progress enough to do audio-through-usb so I want to look at it again.

Of course, another option is to use the USB2 device that output MPEG4 video by hardware, again that means $$$.

I am not against selling hardware but it would beat the purpose of hacking Xbox as if I throw in all the extra $$$, I could get a faster PC that has PCI slot for a TV capture card and achieve the same purpose. Why bother to do it on Xbox then ?

The challenge to me has always been a PVR cheaper than PC, I can build similar product with the Via setup if I don't mind paying the DreamX price.
