Connecting My Pc To My 360, Problems.
« on: January 23, 2009, 05:32:00 PM »

Hi, I just found these forums and hope that someone can help me out.

I run XP sp3, and trying to connect it to my 360 via WMP11.

When I try to enable the sharing, my PC cannot see the xbox, and the xbox tests that you can run does not see the pc either.

They are connected via a D-Link Ethernet switch.

I read this thread: http://www.go4expert.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13370

And I tried pinging my Xbox and it doesnt seem to exist.

I turned on every sharing setting I can find, disabled my firewall, ran a network setup wizard and no luck so far.

If there is any other information about my setup you need to help troubleshoot this, please tell me and I'll get the info!

Now I believe my problem is that I am using a switch (not a router) so each device that connects to the internet does so by itself....

But I can connect to my brothers PC fine...?

Anyone know what I can do?

you need to check your ip's to make sure that they are in the same network (ie 192.168.1.... or whatever you use for the home networking ip range since your not using a router your switch won't have dhcp). I would recommend picking up a router either way just to help alleviate setup problems and packet collision.

They have a different IP.

The problem is, my entire house is wired for Ethernet, and we need a lot of ports. A router with a lot of ports is expensive, while a switch is cheap. Thats why we bought the switch... I'm not going to lay down 100$ just to buy a fancy router-- even if that solves my problem  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

They're supposed to have different IP addresses, and you DON'T need a router to "alleviate packet collision", although having a router somewhere on your network will make setup easier.

Let's get some basic facts. What is your PC IP address? Are you using DHCP on your PC? What is your Xbox IP address? Do you have a router to connect you to the Internet (I'm guessing you do), and if so what is its IP address?

Okay, I'll answer these to the best of my ability:

My Computer's Ip: 64.231.135.242
My Xbox's Ip: 64.231.136.104

I'm using PPoE.

My Internet Service Provider is Sympatico, (Im from Canada). My network is setup as such: The modem connects directly to the d-link switch, which splits the connection to my Xbox, and all of the PCs in my house.

I have never actually had a router, I have always used a switch. But from what I understand, a router dials into the internet, and your computers connect to the internet provided by the router. However on a switch, each device has to dial on its own.

64.231.142.59

--When I say I can connect to my bros computer, I mean that I can see his Itunes library. I never actually setup a network between the two.

if you can, turn off dmz in your switch settings. if you can access ant settings that is. I had to turn it off on my router for it to work.

Exact same problem.

Current builds:

Macbook running OS X 10.4 and Airport Extreme
360 Elite with Wireless Adapter
Some ghetto ass computer running XP Build 2, wireless USB connector to Modem/Router.

Can ping between computers, neither can ping Xbox. All 3 have a different IP address but the same Subnet Mask. Help!
