ive never used linux before but im beginning to get the hang of it... one thing that is bothering me is installing AIM (aol instant messenger) v1.5.x. I "ls" while in the root directory in bash and it shows the file i downloaded which is the linux distribution of AIM. But when i type its name to install it it says there is no such file... anyone know what im doing wrong if im even close?

try

cd /directory/where/file/is
./filename

or if its a tared and zipped source try

cd /directory/where/file/is
bzip2 -d filename
tar -xfv filename

now u got a new directory where the source is, do
cd sourcedirectory
./configure
make
make install

It was all going so well... installed Linux, without a hitch.

Now, when I load it from the hard drive, I get to the login page - I type in the username: root, and the password: xbox

Press return - and it goes to a black screen wanting me to login. No, it isn't a problem with me focusing. It is being typed in...

Any ideas?

I don't wish to be rude, since this is my first post in this forum nor do I wish to rub anyone up the wrong way, but would it be possible if the thread was updated to the latest version, that being Ed's Debian 0.4.1?

Ok, I've been messing with this for hours, with no success.

I can log into the version of Linux I booted from the CD. When I try to login to the version on my hard drive, it immediately goes to a black screen that says this:
------------------------------------------

Version: XBOX Linux 0.3.1
Hostname: xbox.mshome.net
Terminalline: tty1
Linux Ver.: 2.4.20-xbox

xbox.mshome.net login:
------------------------------------------

And that's it. There's a flashing cursor, but I don't have a keyboard so I can't type anything in. (It's a DOS like screen, so the keyboard emu definitely won't work.)

I must be entering in the username and password correctly... I see the username root appear, I press return, the cursor moves to the password field, I type in "xbox" and press enter. (It doesn't show up of course...)

Please help, I'm eager to get this working. sad.gif

You need to use the boot_fatx_e.isom or boot_fatx_f.iso files. Use isobuster and then put which ever applys to your HD. Then start the default.xbe

Auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
  address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  gateway x.x.x.x

Just replace the x's with yours and the netmask if needed.  Dsn isn't required I believe

If that doesnt work try

auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet static
  eth0 dns=xx.x.xx.x
  address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  gateway x.x.x.x

ok this works great... but how do i make it a dhcp client?
do I just replace the word static with dhcp? thats not working..
please help....

I was wondering about this myself but then I noticed a readme file as part of the download and it tells exactly what to do. Way different from the 0.3.1 install.

I'm also looking to put Linux on my Xbox, but with Debian 0.4.1 released with not a very clear way to install, I was just going to install 0.3.1 with the existing tut. Shouldn't "apt-get update" take care of updating the version of Debian to 0.4.1 anyway or is this way off base?

ummm... not really. the 0.4.1 has the 2.4.21 kernel. apt-get won't update that for sure... don't suppose anyone wants to help out with my vmware thread?
