QUOTE (BodySuitMan @ Apr 10 2003, 08:54 PM)
I was just reading the debian installation tutorial on this site and it said to test your network connection you should type in ping -c 4 google.ca. I did that, it hangs for 10 seconds then says ping: unknown host google.ca. So i'm assuming i have my network settings wrong. But i have my network settings the same as the are in evox, so i dont understand. I'm using a router if that is of any importance. Does linux use a special network port that my router could be blocking? If so, what port is it?

I added this line to the tutorial:

If you get a bunch of "localhost" errors, then your internet's not setup right:
Type in "cd /etc/network/" then "nano interfaces" (nano is a text editor and interfaces in your networkcfg file). Edit whatever you need (Static to DHCP or whatever). And save it,

Now type "ifdown eth0", then "ifup eth0", that restarts your network.

Repeat from "apt-get update".

Sounds like you need to change the word "Static" in that file to "DHCP".

hmmm... i tried that already and when i tried restarting the network after it said it couldnt read the interfaces file, so i put it back. But i was also thinking that changing the network settings to DHCP could be the answer, but I can't figure out how. Any other suggestions?

Np, if anyone else wants to know what to type in there (if it was empty like mine)
its

dhcp

iface eth0 inet dhcp

static

iface eth0 inet static

address 192.168.1.1   (varies obviously)
netmask 255.255.255

type man interfaces for more information

also, if you want unstable sources (aka more software, however it is obviously unstable, aka beta and alpha.)

type nano /etc/apt/apt.sources

change the stable to unstable for all of the sources then do an apt-get update.

I also recommend doing an apt-get upgrade to upgrade the applications on your system

To search for a file in your cache

apt-cache search "application name here with no quotes"

apt-cache pkgnames is also useful.

Have fun

A pretty nice and useful utility is Kpackage. It's a nice alternative to APT and can be used right in KDE. If you want a graphical alternative to APT and don't want to use Koffice there is Synaptic and also Aptitude. Synaptic is a graphical interface while Aptitude is a console application. To get Kpackage just type in Bash "apt-get install kpackage"
NOTE: You must have KDE sucussfully installed to install kpackage.

Auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
  address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  gateway x.x.x.x

Just replace the x's with yours and the netmask if needed.  Dsn isn't required I believe

If that doesnt work try

auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet static
  eth0 dns=xx.x.xx.x
  address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  gateway x.x.x.x

I've followed all the steps but all I get are monochrome colors.
Actually, it's black, white and red.

The text is clear and the OS appears to be working.

I am using component video with the MS HD AV pack and I've tried both the vesa and riva xbe's
Using the normal composite video pack, I can see colors no problem.

Are any of you seeing this problem?

I can post my /var/log/dmesg if you think that might help diagnose the problem.

YEAAA , the problem was just because i burnt the installation CD as a XISO instead of an normal PC ISO. (nero, 4x, finilize, disc-at-once)

Special thanks to Edgar Hucek who help me on it.

Work great now.

Tip: Based on MY experience No version of Linux will boot on a 1.0 Xbox if you are using the Xecuter2 4974 no-animation bios

I did the XBOXLinuxInstall thing, then it went thru some crap. I didn't type anything now the screen is justblack. Been black for
about 6 minutes now....Is this normal??
edit: i guess thats a little thing called the screen saver

2nd edit:I've got a new problem now.  I can't get the netwrok to work. it works for evox, and I typed in 192.168.1.104 for my ip in Linux, I wanted it dhcp tho. is that what I should hav typed? When i got to bash and type cd/etc/network it does nothing. Says directory doesnt exist. but i found the directory browsing with mplayer.I've tried so many variaitons....Any advice?
3rd edit: ok i got it now, i didnt put a space after cd. thanks. ill probably ask another question in like 10 seconds lol
