360 And Mp4 Files = Black Screen?!?
« on: March 01, 2008, 08:58:00 AM »

Hi there,

I'm completely new to the whole MP4 file usage on the 360 - reason being is that I've just bought a HDTV.  Anyways, I did download a number of HD files - both MKV files and MP4 (the MKV files were converted using GotSENT, like many people here).

I did read that the conversion process of MKV to MP4 can be flawed - and I did try the tutorial on afterdark (this that right?) but MEGUI failed to convert the AC3 file...

I made the files available to TVersity (my PC is connected via wireless lan) and to get to the point, none of these files worked - the navite MP4 file I downloaded was supposed to work on the 360 - it had xbox 360 in the file name, and my own didn't converted files didn't work either.

I even copied the files to a USB Memory stick and put that in - the 360 would recognise the file, and attempt to play it, but again a black screen....

Am I doing something stupidly wrong here?

Cheers
Chris

I use Handbrake to encode to h264 (xbox or ps3 preset), and I also get SOME videos that produce the "black screen".  I don't get audio, though.  Strange, indeed.  I'm trying to figure this out, as well.  Maybe it's that damn mp4box?  I swear I have more trouble using mp4box when it comes to muxing audio and video streams.  So now I use mp4creator, and I have (so far) 100% success when trying to fix videos that the 360 refuses to play (these particular videos are of a different problematic nature, but still related to muxing.). Right now, I'm testing those "black screen" videos with mp4creator to see if I have any luck.  I'll report back if I have any success.  In the meantime, if anyone could shed any light on the problem here......  I'm using dvd+r discs and usb drives.

Apologies for not replying sooner - I have tried both Component and VGA (no HDMI on my 360!) and I don't get any audio either.

I will try the programs you talk about but it is a real shame that we can't just play the files we download on our 360s!!

Well, after doing various testing using mp4creator, I found that it produces sync issues sometimes.  I updated yamb, and I have no problems.  But if you REALLY want to avoid hassles, try out "Fairuse Wizard version 2.8".  It now encodes for the 360 and ps3 and other devices.  I've been using it lately, and it seems flawless.   No hangups, whatsoever.  I'm very happy with it so far.  Give it go.
