Toshiba Pulls the Plug on HD DVD - Ends Format War
« Reply #30 on: February 17, 2008, 03:48:00 AM »

though I ain't happy one bit with HD-DVD losing, I'm still glad this nonsense is finally over.
but let's look at it from the bright side: blu-ray doesn't have all those encryptions HD-DVD has and it has a higher theoretical capacity.

Couldn't this allow sony to drop the price of the ps3 sooner (quicker) than predicted.

I mean if they take a bigger loss on the hardware wouldn't this be made up in blu ray sales PLUS allowing even more people to purchase the ps3 again boosting more sales of software and movies?

Since they basically own the market now on movies shouldn't this drive the blu ray side of hardware down in pricing?

think about it.
they won.
if you want to go HD, you have to buy a bluerayplayer.
they won't drop any prices as they basically own the market now.
now they dictate the price.

That will not happen, because, Individual manufacturers will now have confidence to put money into manufacturing BR Players. Those same manufacturers (especially the Chinese ones) will want the biggest share of the market which will normally be achieved through price. natural manufacturer competition between all the companies will dictate price and prices will come down.
If only Sony was allowed to manufacture the only HD format available, then the scenario is a monopoly and they dictate the market price. This is nothing like.
What you have stated is like saying if we wanted optical playback (DVD) previously then the price would always be high because there was no other optical format to compete. The prices still dropped to ridiculous levels because each manufacturer want the biggest share of that.

i'm not going to buy anything bluray for a long while, i'd rather support a dead format than sony

I highly doubt I will ever own anything Blu-ray. It's not a format that I would support or dump money into. The future was HD-DVD but with that dream dead I will stick to Hi-Def downloads for any Hi-Def needs. Blu-ray brings nothing but restrictions and Sony to the table and frankly neither one of those are pleasing.

And we all know how that's going to go. Sony knew they wouldn't win unless they had the studios and they spent the money (see bought out) in securing that. That price will be reflected in the system itself. Even before the downward spiral of HD-DVD, HD-DVD was the clear choice in price, product, and abilities. However, as many a consumer has learned Sony's pockets go deep and it doesn't matter what you (the consumer) want or care about because in the end it's all about the profit.

We will all miss HD-DVD. To blu-ray supporters: Enjoy your cripple ware and congratulations.

What's HD-DVD?  laugh.gif

I've argued (more like excitedly discussed) with my friends since the beginning of this format war, why Blu-Ray was going to win. I'm glad this is finally over, I may now tip my hat to them.

The formula:
-PS3 pushes Blu-Ray and
-Blu-Ray pushes PS3.

It was a brilliant idea on Sony's part, although risky. But it definitely worked (obviously many other factors helped a lot such as the exclusivity deals etc.)
But now you will see a real jump in PS3 sales due to this being over. And before someone quotes me and attempts to counter what I've said or prove me wrong, no. I'm not going to reply. I'm done. As I've said before,   just let the cards play out to see the winner.

Now I wait anxiously to buy a Blu-Ray burner (Once the price drops of course). Here's to the end of this ridiculous format war!  pop.gif

It Microsoft releases an external Blu Ray-Drive for the 360 that you can also connect to the PC via USB and cost under 150$ I would buy it immediatly.  smile.gif

That's all, folks. Cue huge celebration in Times Square, equivalent to the celebration at the end of WWII, HD-DVD firesale, and skyrocketing PS3 sales. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to buy a $50 HD-DVD add-on off ebay and a gazillion movies laugh.gif . Though, for the first time, I actually feel like I'm missing out on something by not having a PS3 unsure.gif .

Amazon has some sales too.  I picked up a used one for $68 including shipping.

M$ messed this up! There could have been 10 million more HDVD players in the US if they would have incorporated the drive in the 360 in the first place. Now, not only is HDDVD gone, but Sony is sure to seriously surpass the 360 with the Ps3. Many, many bad decissions by Microsoft. Maybe they should get out the business.

ya maybe, except for the fact that it would have made the console $600 like the ps3, and then it wouldnt have sold nearly as well.

so much for that theory.

Sony doesn't have this big monopoly on hd now, get some facts straight and quite whining

I would like to comment but to be honest I don't understand the post very well. Could you edit it to make it clearer.

I would wager that many people who now say they will never support Blu Ray will be first in the queue if MS brought out an add on to play Blu Ray or included it in it's next console. Never say never.

I still bet that a hd-dvd based drive will end up in either the Gamecube 3 or xbox 720 or whatever they call their next consoles. After all it could help delay piracy by having a format that no-one can burn to.
