Toshiba Pulls the Plug on HD DVD - Ends Format War
« Reply #15 on: February 16, 2008, 10:13:00 PM »

This must piss off a lot of people that bought hd-dvd players.  I almost did right before x-mas, when they were only $90.  Glad I did not.

Anyone know how the PS3 rates as a bluray player?  Are the standalones better?  Not sure which option I am going with yet, but I would think that standalones are better.  Since PS3 doesn't have any really good games, it's not worth getting one if it's bluray player is not that good.  I will wait until their next price drop though.

The PS3 is the only option for a reasonably priced full-spec. player right now.
However it consumes 200 watts of power as opposed to stand-alone players that use about 40 watts.
Also it is region-locked for both DVDs and Blu-ray Discs (some Blu-ray players are not region locked for Blu-ray nor DVD).

The only other option right now for a full-spec. player is Panasonic's BD50, just a little pricey though!

Tried the link on the Main page didn't work So I googled and the most trusted source on the story was here . I personally purchased the PS3 a month ago and I am now carefully considering replacing my original Xbox that I use as a media center with the PS3.

The worst thing with HD-DVD loosing is that HD-DVD was mutch better with the HD-DVD Extras and that HD-DVD was moore consumer friendly. I presume Warner brothers prefered to scrue the consumeres and then going Blu Ray is the way to go. And I believe Sony payed of the Warner Brothers executives, gave them a nice cabin for christmas or a private jet of their own so they don't have to share the one they already have with eachother. I wish HD-DVD had won and still I haven't invested in any of the HD systems. It just feels bad that the worst format have woon. It is not about witch format i s better but of witch format have deeper pockets. However when PS 3 went Blu Ray Sony had to win because it would be really funny owning a PS 3 if HD-DVD had woon. And now we know that throwing money on warner brothers was the right thing to do because sony wouldn't have woon without them. However I hope that Toshiba continue manufacturing the HD-DVD RE roms for PC and the prices on the HD-DVD DL media goes down to the prices of DVD+R DL then I Can use HD-DVD Externally with a TVIX 6500 and watch X264. Warner Brothers scrued the consumers, now it's time for the consumers to scrue the Warner Brothers.........

Oh well. I got 6 free movies and Heroes season 1 with my HD DVD addon. Now I can get the Matrix trilogy, Planet Earth, and many others for practically nothing. Seems like an ok situation to me.

Couldn't this allow sony to drop the price of the ps3 sooner (quicker) than predicted.

I mean if they take a bigger loss on the hardware wouldn't this be made up in blu ray sales PLUS allowing even more people to purchase the ps3 again boosting more sales of software and movies?

Since they basically own the market now on movies shouldn't this drive the blu ray side of hardware down in pricing?

Well Sony lost the Betamax / VHS war so I guess it all balances out.

Doesn't matter to me I'm happy with my DVDs thank you very much. Buying either format never crossed my mind.

I kind of hoped that Sony would lose the second war though oh well wishful thinking.

As for buying a PS3 until a REAL compelling title is released like Metal Gear Solid or another big franchise forget about it.

Titles sell consoles not the added functionality of DVD playback thats just a bonus and a sneaky ploy by Sony to get users hooked on Bluray.

There have been no official announcements from Toshiba concerning this, only an 'unidentified source' saying "We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business" Source: (Reuters reporting on NHK story).

I think this still qualifies as a rumor until an official announcement is made by Toshiba or the HD DVD promotional group. I am also somewhat surprised at the way it is being reported on X-S without at least a "Rumor:" tag in front of the story or something like "Toshiba plans to pull the plug, says source" etc. :s

Also, if they ARE pulling the plug, Toshiba would be alienating many loyal home theater enthusiasts that have put a lot of money into a great format. Many of whom are still willing to continue supporting the format in spite of some of the recent developments. I certainly don't expect Toshiba to bankrupt themselves supporting HD DVD but I would be extremely surprised if they were going to pull the plug entirely with such a loyal user base already established and as large as it is. There are still people willing to spend money on the format and for Toshiba to abandon it completely would seem foolish on thier part.

With that said, I have some reservations on a sinking ship, would anyone care to join me? tongue.gif

For the person asking about the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player.....
At the moment it is the best choice as a BR player as far as price goes, plus the fact that it has the added option of playing games.I bought my PS3 on Launch day and I pretty much only use it as a BR player.I't s a little slow at loading and skipping chapters but then I don't have another BR player to compare it to so I don't know if this is normal. It is noticeably slower than my 360 HD-DVD player but they both look great in 1080p thru HDMI.
Well I guess this means I won't be completing my Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek:TOS HD collections...at least not on HD-DVD...... sad.gif

For the money and the facility to play games as well, you can't go wrong.
The Sony haters will tell you how crap they are etc etc . The truth is the PS3 is a very good Blu Ray player that can be upgraded via a software update for new profiles. The quality is no different to HD DVD. I have the Toshiba standalone HD DVD player through the same TV and there is no difference in the playback quality.

You don't own either format yet you are capable of making a decision on which format is best? Fine if you have done some research. That doesn't appear to be so. Have a look at upgradeable profiles on Blu Ray, to see what is and is not possible both now and in the future.
More consumer friendly? Having an extra feature does not make something more consumer friendly. In fact the more options, the less consumer friendly a device of any type can be. It makes it complicated for the average buyer.

You are still grasping at straws. The format is effectively finished. Toshiba simply can't afford the cost of going it alone on this. Their supposed friends quickly turned to enemies and the cheap prices on players was obviously a sell out at heavy loss to Toshiba. Makes it a deal and a half right now.

I am about to remove the stupid gloating posts in here and the war is over in this thread as well. There is no need for stupid antagonistic attempts to "rub peoples noses in it". Believe it or not now is a very good time to purchase an HD DVD player.
