...but let's look at it from the bright side: blu-ray doesn't have all those encryptions HD-DVD has ...

WTF?!

Blu-ray Disc has FOUR (4) layers of DRM: AACS, Region Coding, Water Marking, and BD+!!!

HD DVD only has AACS.

Now that this is over, the worst thing in my opinion is the stupid bluray name! HD-DVD is the next logical name for a dvd that is in HD. Once all the conflict is over they should merge and use the bluray tech and the HD-DVD name. Will I buy a bluray player? doubt it but who knows. Now people have a real reason to buy a ps3 as the games for the system are a joke! Sony had to have some way of dumping the ps3 on us. If it wasn't for the bluray player in it the 8 people I know that bought one would have never got it. All they use it for is to play movies.

I guess this is one of those sad times for all the 360 fans, our only format (HD-DVD) has gone by the way, and will soon be worthless as others have pointed out...

Hopefully MS will produce a blu-ray add on, but i have my doubts if they'll do this in the current console generation.

And i also agree, i think in the up-coming months i think PS3 sales will go up and up, compaired to what we have recently seen, i think sony has pulled a fast one once again, same with the PS2 VS DC its pretty much back in those days once again..

I have to admit, i'm supprised at Toshiba, i thought they'd stand a good chance in the format war, and i did think they stood a somewhat decent chance, but i honestly think if the PS3 didn't already come with a blu-ray drive they'd be roughly at the same level as Toshiba, in which case the format war would still be on-going.

I'm glad in some respects the format war appears to be over, as i can now concentrate somewhat more on getting this format, and getting settled on one player rather than two.

Lucky for me i already do own a PS3, which deffinatly works in my benefit after reading this news, but as a huge xbox fan, it does seem sad to have lost what was 'our' format to the 'ps3' format.

Ah well, i guess i'll keep a good look out now for some good blu-ray movies and possibly a stand alone player sometime soon.

Cheers.

That will not happen, because, Individual manufacturers will now have confidence to put money into manufacturing BR Players. Those same manufacturers (especially the Chinese ones) will want the biggest share of the market which will normally be achieved through price. natural manufacturer competition between all the companies will dictate price and prices will come down.
If only Sony was allowed to manufacture the only HD format available, then the scenario is a monopoly and they dictate the market price. This is nothing like.
What you have stated is like saying if we wanted optical playback (DVD) previously then the price would always be high because there was no other optical format to compete. The prices still dropped to ridiculous levels because each manufacturer want the biggest share of that.

Thats exactly what I was thinking Chancer...thanks for clarifying, now that manufacturers know which will win overall they will start to want that piece of the market making everything finally go down in price, now I guess some  of us (alot of us)  wait and see when that will happen.

Looks like I can finally buy a high def player without having to think about whether the format will survive. I'll probably pick up a 120GB PS3 (w/ dualshock 3) when they come out here in the US.

thats what i thought, standalone units id be taking a risk with, the ps3 there are good deals out now, shame the games cant be as good as the 360 or is me!!!

Try out Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank. There are some good games those 2 spring to mind immediately. Others will arrive. Everything in one box.

region coding isn't a real DRM encryption scheme, it's just a an ages-old trick so that non-region-free players can't play imported discs, thus keeping people from buying movies that aren't released (yet or ever will be) in their country, also this prevents people from taking advantage of world currency differences such as the difference between $ and €

and BD+ is just a virtual machine embedded in authorized players, no real encoding, no encrypted key, so scratch those 2 from the list already

no need to get all ballistic on people mate.

Yup, as many have said the so called high-def downloads don't compare with the physical media formats for quality and in order for them to do so they would take an eternity to download.  Anyways, as far as HD-DVD is concerned bring on the clearance sales.  Can't wait to get a bunch of high-def titles for dirt cheap.  Deep Discount DVD, Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble already have about 100-150 titles for $10-$15 each (including shipping).

Well, this news must have convinced everyone to buy a PS3.  I went to Walmart today, and for the first time since launch, they were completely out of stock.  I was amazed.  Looks like 360 will actually have some competition this year!  LOL laugh.gif

Sorry, your way off here.

First of all, Blu-Ray is a standard that was founded by 9 separate companies:  Sony, Matsushita, Pioneer, Phillip's, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.  All of them are a part of the Blu-Ray Disc Association, and all of them have a vested interest in the formats success, as well as full voting rights on the direction of the format.  (Several of the companies besides Sony own patents involved in the blu-ray disc format, and they all receive royalties from the format.)

Yay! Someone with a brain!
Thanks Flagg3 for explaining this so I didn't have to again for the 1 millionth time.

Well I am happy it is over.

To all the "I will never have Blu-Ray because it is Sony" people you need to settle down and
get off the FANBOY wagon and realize Blu-Ray is the winner in the market now for HD optical disks.

And as stated above Blu-Ray is NOT OWNED BY SONY! It was founded by 9 major separate companies.
