The NPD Group attempted to quiet the storm of online scuttlebutt with the following statement:
"The facts are that during the week that is being singled out, both Blu-ray disc players and software were being given away for free with the purchase of 1080p TVs. It is also important to note that the instant rebate promotions that had previously netted Toshiba's players' MSRPs to $199 and $249 had actually ended on Jan. 5th -- causing an increase in HD DVD's MSRP back to $299 and $399 during that same week. Since Toshiba's retail price move on Jan. 13th to $149 / $199 -- Toshiba is seeing very positive sales trends at retail. This reinforces the fact that price is a significant driver of sales."
"Toshiba's HD DVD players represent a significant value to the consumer and the marketing campaign that just began is proving effective."

Damn, Sony has spent an absolute mint on advertising, payoffs, and mis information. I guess in the end if their DRM infested format wins it will help the sales of their lagging PS3.

If bluray does win, get ready for the era of constant online firmware upgrades for new copy protections, and online verification of disc authenticity. That is what Sony and corporations in general want. They want to be able to track your habits in general, and be able to eventually charge you per device. Its all about money, consumers rights are becoming almost non-existent.

Well said.

If DRM "digital downloads" is the winner, it won't be much prettier either.

Who really cares who wins the format war the consumer will ultimately end up paying per view no matter who/what wins; sheep, thought I.

I have the xbox360 HD-DVD drive...

I have purchased 17 HD-DVD's so far...

I have just ordered 'The frighteners' and 'Blade Runner' HD-DVD's 5mins ago... (so will make 19)

I'm not saying one day I would'nt consider blu-ray... but I'm not going to be forced into it!

All warner have done is remove the movies I can purchase so I now feel more than happy to pirate those films I cannot purchase on my format of choice... I've spent lots of money on dvd's and hd-dvd's so I dont feel guilty at all..and I will continue to support HD-DVD in my own small way!

While sales may be indicative that HD-DVD isn't dead yet, with the last moves of Warner, New Line, & Fox/Lionsgate all jumping to BD exclusive, the support is gone. Most of the movies I watch are from Warner, New Line, Sony & Disney (all BD exclusive), so for someone like me, HD player sales are a bit of a moot point. I would prefer everything be on HD-DVD, as I like the technology as a whole better, but since 80% of my interests will only be on BD for now, I don't see HD-DVD in my future sad.gif

The consumer will ultimatly decide certainly... but as per paying per view...that only satisfies the non-collectors.

Many have moved on from the vid shop rentals, to purchases and keeping for collections.

There is some truth there though...at the moment we are being dictated to...or dicked around with...by these companies...but once the dust settles..and media hype has broken..the consumer does win in the end...its just a big delay!

23 hd dvd movies in the house, including balderunner (fantastic print) suitcase edition, 3 more bought today and 5 on preorder with an eye to getting the tosh ep30 for £120, and not a bd movie i want in sight

Face it, Sony finally came up with a winning formula after all their failed proprietary format attempts, mini-disc, betamax, memory stick, to name some. Stick the new format in one of their most popular vehicles, the PS3, (the trojan horse method) then cater to the big corporations copyright fears with extravagant copy protection, throw billions of dollars at it, and disregard consumers. Its working like a champ, since most people won't notice till its too late (the sheep). The sad thing is the bluray idiots will be crying the loudest when they can't make a backup of the movie they purchased, or their player won't work with the newest copy protection scheme. Or better yet, they make a copy, but the bluray player down samples it to less than dvd quality because its RW media, an nice little built in hardware feature.

Whatever....HD still has some ground to make up.  Especially after the last bit of bad news.  

I am with most of you though on my preference of HD.  I have both fomats and never buy BD movies, I am not a videophile and cant see a difference in quality of picture, but something about BD just feels clunky and slow to me.

Something I havent herd yet, how long are these 'exclusive' deals good for? 1 year, 6 months, what? They cant be a forever sealed deal.

Im going to guess we will see blu exclusive for a while, then suddenly blu gets release month then hd follow up. If sales pick, up hd a week after blu etc. Or maybe library titles dont have exclusives.

Sony cant keep firing money at studios for exclusive rights. Right now the only people winning are the studios. After a dull year of movies they are making up for it by pulling in all these exclusive deals. I never cared if one format had an exclusive or not, just give me movies in Hddvd, give the other people movies in blu how hard is that.
