What's The Secret To Xbox 360 Mp4?
« on: January 23, 2008, 02:58:00 AM »

here's the deal, i started with an mkv containing 1920x800 h264 AVC 5.1 profile video with DTS sound.
i demuxed it and then transcoded the DTS to 2 channel LC AAC 512k.
i then changed the 5.1 level to 4.1 and muxed them back.

put it on my usb drive and Xbox 360 says it's not a supported format. (but it did see the AAC or MP4 because it knew it needed to download an update)

where did i go wrong?

p.s. it was 12mbps before, and 10mbps with the AAC so i think i'm good in that respect?

i used VLC to transcode the DTS to AAC is that maybe my problem?  YAMB seemed to like the audio just fine and it plays on my PC...

it's also a 9gb file on an HFS+ drive

Try building a mp4 file with the video (or sound) only so you can identify if the problem is the audio or the video

mp4box -fps 23.976 -add yourvideo.264 output.mp4

you can cut a sample if you don't want to mux the all thing, this will cut from the sec 0 to 120

mp4box -split-chunk 0:120 -fps 23.976 -add yourvideo.264 output.mp4

btw you don't need 512k for a stereo aac audio, 192 is enough smile.gif

Your problem lies in using anything other than 2 channel AAC. If you want surround you have to use Divx or Xvid with AC3 or WMV with advanced audio profiles.

Your file needs to be less than 4GB if you are trying to play anything other than WMV. Looking at your file, you will need to split 3 times to bring all three parts to less than 4GB each.

Note: Thats 4GB, not 4.3 or 4.4 GB such as a DVD ISO or Movie, it has to be 4GB.

You also state the the resolution is 1920x800, this is basically 1080p which xbox has difficulty in displaying correctly, or just playing at all. This is probably not due to limitations, but moreso that the original video is level 5.1 and 1080p and not level 4.1 and 1080p

Theres nothing wrong with the converted sound file.

Also, the bitrate is an important factor, 10mbit is the limit, but the xbox does not correctly play it at that bitrate, and its probably again to do with the fact that its a lever 5.1 bought down to 4.1.

So in summary, to play a mp4 file, it must be:

1 - Less than 4GB
2 - 720p max
3 - less than 10mbit bitrate
4 - Level 4.1
5 - AAC LC 2 Channel

Out of all the MKVs that I tried to convert, all of them worked, the exceptions being the ones that don't fit in the above category.

And, of course, correct me if I am wrong at any point.
