Help With 360 Media Streaming
« on: December 11, 2007, 01:16:00 PM »

Hello,

i have up until recently been streaming all my media to the 360 via wmp11, off a second SATA hard drive installed in my pc, i want to not have all my media on the pc any more so i was looking at this....

ebay link to item

After reading it i noticed that it says it only supports streaming music and photo's to the 360, after emailing the seller and asking if it would stream video as well to the 360 he replied and i quote 'HI THIS SUPPORTS ALL STREAMING VIA UMPN BUT NO SOFTWARE IS INCLUDED ', so i taking it that it will stream video, music and photos to my 360.
as i understand it to stream media to the 360 media sharing software ie wmp11 is needed, running on the host pc, well if i move all the media to this drive how do i run the media sharing software on it?, i dont want the pc running 24 hours a day anymore for various reasons, can i just leave this on and the pc off and strem that way? i know on the pc i can just map the drive and access the media on my pc that way, but what about on the 360.

also i guessing this just plugs into the spare network port on my router and it stays on 24 hrs a day.

Thanks in advance for any replys concerning this

I've read about people posting problems accessing media on NAS drives, even a few that had their NAS working previously but not after the new update. I personally don't use a NAS unit, so I don't have any first hand experience for you. I'd just build a file server box if I were you, assuming you've got extra parts in a closet somewhere as many of the users here would.  Check out www.freenas.org as an operating system. I haven't tried this with the 360 either, FYI.

i see what your saying but if im gonna build a file server type thing, i might as well have the main pc running all the time.
