Warner Bros. on HD DVD, Blu-ray: No changes in Support

Web forums were ablaze this morning because of a controversial report  by Rich Greenfield of Pali Research, saying in 2008 Warner Bros. would cease support of HD DVD and become Blu-ray only.  As a syndicated newspaper columnist I have contacts within the industry and found the whole thing suspicious and oddly timed. My PR contacts put me in touch with Jim Noonan, Warner Bros. Senior Vice President and General Manager, for clarification.  I received a response almost immediately and his reply is as follows:

"Dear Mr. Lindich, We have made no decision to change our present policy which is to produce in both HD DVD and Blu-ray."

Or the usual "no were not cutting support" and then support is cut

they could just be covering their asses to keep their current stock of HDDVD discs selling

but who knows. Im still waiting to see which format remains after this war

lol Even though I'm getting a PS3 at Xmas ill still be building my movie collection in HD-DVD...They all seem cheaper than Blu-Ray movies for a start..at least I have the option to get Blu-Ray exclusives if I want a certain movie.

Hate saying it, but I think Blue Ray will win in the end.

Glad I'm waiting.

Warner said they won't choose sides until after the holiday season. Whichever side they choose it could tip the scales. If they do pick Blu-Ray, I hate to say it but it will probably be the end of HD-DVD as Blu-Ray would have 70% of the HD media market. If HD-DVD gets Warner it would give the market an almost even split for each.

So I doubt Warner will cut HD-DVD or Blu-Ray yet, hopefully they stick to their word and wait till after the holiday.

I concur. Everytime I see an early report of something like this, the company involved scrambles to confirm or deny any information regarding it. Very similar to MSFT saying,"There is no malfunction with our consoles." Then saying, "Ok, the consoles are crapping out, we'll fix 'em for free." Big companies always denying bad press until the absolute last minute. Whether it is the right decision or not for WB, dropping a format just doen't qualify as good press. So here come the denial, until the official statement.
