Swanni's 2008 Predictions: Blu-ray vs. HD DVD
« Reply #15 on: December 06, 2007, 12:30:00 PM »

agreed, good prediction, and it would be a nice move since China has been moving forward with their new hd format as well.  i wonder if early on either side thought the other would get this far - both formats are pretty stable for now as long as the backing companies keep throwing tons of money behind their format...

everybody wins with a unified format - unless they can't ensure compatibility for those early adopters...

youre going to download a 30gig movie and have no movie in hand? Sounds good until your HD crashes or you go to a friends house and want to watch that movie.  Besides, who wants to wait for a download"? thats just stupid. I have about 300 dvd's. IF i downloaded all of them and they were all HD I would have 9TB NINE TERABYTES of files to store somewhere. IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!! UNREALISTIC!!!!!!!!!! ITS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!

not true at all, just look at the amazing success of iTunes for a simple example - people used to say how no one would buy music online because they wouldn't get the cover art, lyrics, an actual cd, etc...

be careful with those statements, because we all know that digital on-demand HD content - movies, tv shows, etc is going to happen (and already has on a smaller scale with the XBL marketplace).  of course, storage, hard drive failure, portability, and other issues will all need to be addressed - but none of those are deal-breakers.  you don't have to wait for full download of HD movies even now to start watching.  and 9 TB is not that much of a stretch even with today's standards, heck, even i have over 3 TB of storage spread across my 2 PCs and server.  and those that do a lot of video editing easily have even larger storage needs...

True...but streaming and d/l are different.  As far as storage, I have about 2TB right now on my pc's and my pvr but what percentage of people do a lot of video editing and have that much storage or a need/ want for that much storage.  There will be digital distribution, there is already VOD but people will never accept that as a substitute for media.  At least not for another 20 years imo...
so what i should say then is for a whole crapload of years media will always be the first choice for comsumers to OWN movies.

I want to see more of digital distribution. Im tiered of buying movies for $30 (And now $40+ for Hi-Def) watch em once or twice. Then they just sits there collecting dust, and takes up space! Hell Ill pay $4 watch it with Digi-Dist and then if I really, really want to enjoy it once again after 5 years Ill rent it again.

Pay Per View on HD Cable and Satelite already do exactly what u want for the most part (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

 300 retail DVD's would only be 2.64 TB if they were all DVD-9; I don't think there's even 100 HD/Blu-Ray titles (same format) yet, but usually if a HD/BD utilizes a lot of space, it's to store different versions of the movie. You'll have a 720p and a 1080p version on the same disc, for example, with tons of different audio tracks (regular, forign language, directors commentary, etc);

 The proper way to figure it would be to assume the filesize you'd be downloading. Since an x264 HD in 1080p movie can fit on a DVD-9 (barely), figure 8GB for a 1080p movie then. 8GB * 300 movies = <2.64 TB.

 The biggest arguements against digital downloading I have is that it's time consuming (can't d/l while you game online, otherwise your connection will suffer), and you don't get ANY bonus features that are always on disc.
