Michael Bay: Microsoft wants both HD formats to fail
Posted by XanTium | December 4 19:34 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From movie director Michael Bay on his blog:
Quote

What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.

Oh Michael Michael Michael, you're a mediocre Hollywood director who just made a fortune with the Transformers film with Spielberg foreseeing the entire production.
Don't forget what happened to the Wachowski brothers....

This dude is over his head as if his opinion meant anything.
If anyone has an agenda it's him, every time he opens his mouth it's to praise Blu-Ray.
If anything we the public would rather get our HD fix disk free sleep.gif

i have repeatedly proposed exactly this - that both formats will fail - as long as failure is defined by adoption rates for the optical HD technology.  digital downloads will take over the optical formats before either can make a very large dent in the market.

whether or not this is true about MS or just another ranting from mike bay we will not know for sure, but either way i support this movement toward digital on-demand hd entertainment...

He's just annoyed his film isn't on his preferred format. Disc media formats are a joke however, but saying MS is creating the format war is beyond insane; what about the other manufacturers backing it?

That would be great.  Gates said this a few years back on MSNBC.  Maybe not so great for backwoods country dwellers, but for NYers with FIOS it would work great.  Plus all those people who would probably pay a decent subscription fee for some sort of rental system and not worry about mailing movies back and forth, getting the wrong movie, not having the movie in stock, and getting a scratched copy.  Not only that it would cost less to acquire the movies.  I think NetFlix is doing something like this right now if I am correct, but probably not at a Hi-Def level of quality.  If it moved to High-Def and everyones bandwidth got better, I could only see this being a positive thing.  Anyways just my opinion, maybe I am wrong?

Micheal bay.. what an idiot.. talking about a "Superior" blue ray ..... its superior if you are only talking about density.. ie:storage size but name any other category and hd dvd kills it.. read speed, cost, durability, market share(movies not devices) etc... mr bay is the one who is involved in corporate politics.. not microsoft(they are but not in this respect).. and i can't wait until there is no more disc format period... like the move from paper to txt files, or camera film to sd cards the disc that comes out three times with different features so they can sell you the same product has got to go... its a digital world. i can't wait...

sith, you had me going until I read your sig.... Listen to Al Gore. Please, this guy just needed to find a way to try and stay relevant. I like how he flys a jumbo jet to all of these speaking engagements. Fucking hypocrite douchebag. Look, I've discovered the ManBearPig...

Digital downloads are nice and all, but they are not the same in video as they are in audio. I think that people will always want a hard copy of their purchase. Digital rentals maybe, but not for extended archival purposes. What happens when their HDD crashes? 10 movies at $30 each means a $300 loss when the hard drive crashes. Just the same as some people are with their music libraries (HQ audiophiles still buy CDs), so the same will be for HD movies.

MS thinks that they can rule the digital media world.

dry.gif  I don't know what Michael Bay has to say but it does seem quite odd that most of the commercials on the television are pushing blueray and the sony playstation.  Now that wasn't true a couple of months ago when most of the commercials were for HD and that format was being pounded.

What makes me suspicious, The new Harry Potter commercial for purchasing the DvD has been running for about a week or more now, and it does not mention HD format, they just show a picture of it being in DvD and HD.  Seems like something is getting quiet here.  My question is why?  HD is killing the BlueRay market especially with the sale of the $99.00 HD player, so why get quiet now?  Makes more sense to pound it into the ground!

?? Either Blue Ray won a Gag order or there is a new variable in the works and Michael Bay may not be far off.

Samsung had a press release in September I think that spoke of a breakthrough in nano memory.  They are going to be producing a mem chip where 1 bank holds excess of 60GB.  That is huge!  Imagine a usb drive that can hold 100GB.  Imagine a computer Memory chip that is smaller or holds 500GB of memory!  Hard drives will be obsolete because the cost per capita is now throught the roof when compared to a flash storage system that is smaller and cheaper to produce.  Now put in some DCMA nano circuitry that no one can solder to and you just solved the pirate problem.   2009 is the projected release date.

Knowing this, I have a feeling that disposable digital media will be turning silicone alot sooner then we all want to admit.  Welcome to the FUTURE! rolleyes.gif  pop.gif

Imagine going to the video store and plugging in your USB Stick to their interface and download your rental.

When you by a movie, it will probably be a cartridge USB interface then a DVD Disc.
