Divx And Xvid Playback

Not really impressed.

alot of older avi files don't work.

And some newer tv episodes, there are lines in dark/black/shadow areas.

maybe an updated optional media playback update will fix these.

your thoughts?

I cannot steam any DIVX/XVID files from MCE2005 but the same files play from a DVD+R in the Xbox 360's DVD drive. Anyone else have this problem?

AS per the FAQ

Divx/Xvid are NOT compatible for playbacj from Media Centre or Zune

Only from WM11 or Disc/USB

Sucks

Hi guys,
I just got the fall update and it confirmed the problem I was seeing with the console from the beginning.
Here is my setup:

50 inches Rear projection Grand Wega TV
XBox 360 Elite connected with HDMI + Fiber (Audio)
PS3 connected with HDMI + Fiber (Audio)
Old XBox running XBMC latest build MC360 Skin connected with component cable + Fiber (Audio)

Dlink DNS-323 NAS running TwonkyMedia Server 4.4.2

The NAS stores TV Serials, I use it as a Tivo Box.

Obviously I love consoles and I spend most of my time either playing games, watching pre-recorded shows streamed from the NAS or listening to music.

If I load the same Xvid file and watch it using the old XBox running XBMC I see it in much better quality compared to what I get with the XBox 360 reading the same file.

The Twonkymedia server doen't manipulate the video, it is just passing it over to the XBox 360 for playback, the Xbox 360 just doesn't a good job with it, it does the same job you get playing a DVD.

Just to be clear if I take a DVD - standard 480p and I play it on the XBox 360 I don't get good quality.. there is no upsampling going on.
If I play the same DVD from the old XBox running XBMC I get very good quality, upsampling is visibly there.
If I play it from the PS3 is the bomb... I mean it is gorgeous...

Fortunately the PS3 is going to implement the same compatibilty soon, probably with the next firmware update...

I thought it was nice to share ....

Regards

Have to agree the quality of Divx/Xvid streamed to the 360 is poor to say the least compared to XBMC

I am also having trouble that WM11 Streaming will not see my 2 external NAS drives Maxtor NAS IIs  where as Media Centre and Zune Streaming both see them and do not handle DIVX!!

This really is starting to be a disaster for me, I was happy to accept older DIVX would not play, (it gives me the chance to update them anyway),  but if it wont stream from my NAS Farm, then it really causes problems,

Anyone had any success with Maxtor NAS drives and the 360??

I have two 360's... one live enabled and one 'not' live enabled. I can apply the new dashboard update by swapping the hard drive from the up-to-date 360 into the one running the older dashboard. It has since updated successfully. The problem is that DivX files require the additional media support download. Even if I download this on my Live enabled 360, it doesn't seem to transfer across to the older 360 :/. It'll simply prompt me to sign into Live when I try to play an AVI file to download the media support download. Lame!

Anyone know of a work around?

it's a system file that sits on the harddrive. not sure if it's copyable to a mem card, might need to pick up another 360harddrive.

Applied the Fall update with great anticipation of finally seeing my videos without having to stream via encode360, once applied I atempted to play via MC, doesn't work. Okay I'll try via The Media Blade Videos tab. Hit play and it tells me I need an optional media update, cool, I'll download that and be set. Download the media update hit play and get an unsupported codec message, okay I'll try another file, same thing. Tried 5 and nothing plays. So WTF is all this DIVX support BS!

I read the FAQ, it says it supports From Windows Media Player 11 to Xbox 360 Dashboard Video Player
AVI, thats what I tried and they don't work. If I am doing something wrong please enlighten me, I really hoped this was going to work.

Amazing update. Tried about 20 xvid files and played perfect! For the ones who are having trouble streaming xvid files uninstall all codecs(specially codec packs) install xvid codec again.IT WORKED FOR ME.

So what Robert is saying is that what codecs you have on your PC will effect what the 360 can play. That doesn't sound right. Or is there a way to add codecs to the 360, I am confused......
