Is DivX and the Xbox 360 About To Become A Reality?

From davisfreeberg.com:

DivX followed up Tuesday night's earnings report with a presentation at the JP Morgan SmMid cap conference.
I was rewarded when midway through the Q&A session, JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster coyly probed Kevin Hell about whether or not we were about to see DivX support on the Xbox 360. The question seemed to catch Hell off guard, and while his initial reaction was enthusiasm, there was something about his tone that suggested that Coster might be onto something.

Here is the exchange verbatim, but in order to appreciate the awkwardness of the exchange, you should really listen to the quote at the 24 minute mark of the presentation and make your own decision as to whether or not you hear a sense of urgency in Hell's response.
Coster - "Just a minor point here, but there was a recent Microsoft (MSFT) conference where I believe their media extender now incorporates the DivX codec on it, is that correct? Can you confirm that and does that mean we're soon going to see Xboxes with DivX on them?
Hell - "Yes! that, uh, we're in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can't go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."

At that point DivX CFO Dan Halvorson jumped in and quickly changed the subject.

Um... I thought the DivX codec was dead along time ago.

As in - no one uses it. Would prefer XviD instead but this is still good news tho.

I'll cross my fingers for now.

Edit: after reading a bit, I have found that being as how they are so simular, it would probably play both. Awesome.

Last time I checked any machine that can play mp3 can play wav... so what.  Just because most systems can handle both doesn't make them the same codec -- although they are very similar.

I wish they would just add support for any files type.

Like MKV with its multi-language, subtitle switching options!

Also I wonder if it is going to be only in media center on 360.  Or if can from Windows Media Player?

since they added dir support it makes it easier to just share your whole anime/tv/movie folder.

Yeah it's a little late for DIVX. No one really uses it anymore. I have some stuff from years ago but most have switched to the much better and open source XVID.

Divx and xvid are both mpeg4 compliant, so they can both play each other, you can test this out by only installing divx on your computer but trying to play a video file you know was encoded with xvid. If Microsoft does add divx support xvid will work.

DivX is alive and well.  I would say they are probably bigger then they ever have been.  DivX and Xvid are very similar just one of them is open source.  Both are great codecs

I don't even need to read into this.

The result of this is is predictable: it will suffer from poor compatibility, and because of this attain probably less than 1/15th of market XBMC enjoys.

Stupid, no one cares, the people who do care are technically literate and aren't going to settle for some stupid proprietary decoder with hard limits on what it can decode
