360 Dosnt Detect Compatible Video From Computer
« on: June 24, 2007, 10:54:00 PM »

Hi I worked on this for a while to get 360 to detect my vids on the comp and stream them to my tv. I currently use wmp to stream music but every time I go to the menu on the 360 to stream videos it dosnt show anything but the usual writing blah blah. I have the videos converted to wmv and have put them on a usb drive and played them back on the 360 so they are compatible for sure. Also the videos are already in my wmp library. Also another note on the same subject I have also tried tversity and it could stream music to the 360 but no videos.
thanks

Hi, I have been trying for a few months now.

So far I got to learn about Win XP Pro SP2 that windoze media PLAYER 11 is compatible with streaming *.wmv files. however, before the last update (which microsoft rushed out and screwed up really bad) you could encode your files to .wmv with VLC media and a batch command.

The result was a streamable file.

Now we have all been blessed with microsoft's 'baby' (from hell!) these *.wmv's became unviewable due to a messed up aspect ratio bug on the 360 itself. These old vids, if they play at all, will play in the wrong ratio.

So, basically, U can only stream *.jpg or *.mp3, *.wma.  Pics and tunes. Thats all.

So that was me back to square 1. Im now trying out Win XP Media Centre Edition (MCE) 2005 with media extender and having nothing short of a ballache trying to find codecs that are compatible with MCE and streaming coz my 360 is being nothing short of a KNOBHEAD. (apologies for obsenities but i gotta punish microsoft).

I'm still learning myself but I hope this info clears up any hazy clouds more than solve any problems.

Good luck fellow scener.

Try TVersity.  I'm not exactly sure what your problem is, either your videos aren't in the proper format or WMP11 is being weird, but TVersity will do on the fly transcoding and allow you to stream ANY video format to your 360, as well as share your music and such no problem.  If you have MCE2005, Transcode360 works great for streaming all of my videos for me.  Let me know if you have questions.

Isn't there some software you can install on a Windows XP machine? I remember streaming my media with no hassle, but I'm using Vista now so it's been a while. I seem to remember downloading some software from like www.xbox.com/pcsetup or something... which now goes to http://www.xbox.com/...lldownloads.htm

Have you followed the steps on that page?

I think that is what he did, but for some reason it doesn't recognize his videos, only his music.  I could be wrong tho.

To the post above regarding WMV playback issues, aspect ratio issues, whatever... I've never had such a problem. Not once. I create and play other user-created WMV's all the time, both high and low definition.

I got Win XP MCE 2005 to stream music, pics and vids.

I installed MCE and had problems of streaming vids etc but quickly figured out it was a firewall issue so i MANUALLY allowed everything to do with MCE and my 360.

Problem solved. Streaming everything now.

New problem was compatibility issues.

U cant stream avi at all unless you use transcode 360. I solved this the lazy way and just encode into mpeg 1 or mpeg 2 and MCE is good with these.

Here is a couple of tips before you go wiping your hard drive....

If your xbox can see your PC, ur halfway there so try...
Installing compatible codecs.....
MANUALLY allow everything WMP AND 360 in your firewall & opening ports needed....
Encoding vids to MPEG 1 (kvcd.. 700mb?) or MPEG 2 (downside is HUGE files)...
Connecting either ur PC or 360 or even BOTH to the router by Ethernet cable(faster)....
Closing ALL apps on the PC..
and finally DISABLE shared folders by windows(WMP seems to conflict with this on my pc)

Otherwise MCE with the above pointers worked peachy for me.

Anyone else who has had luck with streaming and posted an 'I know it all', I dont see you solving this problem for anyone so until you do I suggest you go watch sum vids and leave us to it coz I ant gonna help you when your stuck. SOLVE THAT 1!!! SMART ARSE!!

See the link in my signature for converting to WMV. Just match the resolution to your source file and you should have a good quality encode. If you're using a low def source then you should drop the bitrate.
