H264 Ac3 Compaibility?
« on: June 25, 2007, 07:34:00 AM »

Hi

I have all my dvds (including my hd-dvds) stored on my hard drive for streaming to eva8000 and xbmc. I have been messing around with the 360 trying to compare it with the eva. Some of my h264 file splay and some dont and as far as i know ac3 isnt supported yet which i find puzzling being as it is the industry standard for high quality audio.

Is there any news on microsofts view on ac3 files and what is the spec for h264 for full compatilbitly? I will re-rip or convert my files if i knew a foolproof method on ensuring compatibilty

John

Well, the .mp4 container doesn't support ac3, but the .mov one does... (.mp4 is based on .mov; the xbox 360 plays both)... So, your best bet to try would be to put the content into .mov containers with h.264 video and ac3 audio.

However, it's still probablly not going to work. As per: http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/200...ayback-faq.aspx

The xbox 360 supports 2-channel low complexity aac audio only with h.264 videos... This seems like a pretty artificial limitation, but because the 360 doesn't have analog outputs I suppose it makes some sense (Otherwise they'd need to transcode to AC3 or DTS on the fly before outputting)...

Thanks for the reply. So if i want to maintain 5 channel audio i have to use wmv and wmvpro audio? Is there an app out there that can convert the .h264 to wmv?

Thanks

Many have reported good results with WME Assistant.  I have not used it personally.
