I'm gonna say "well, duh" as well.

I noticed a post earlier that suggests that M$ has more control over if the format wins or not. If they wanted it to win, they could've made the DVD drive in every 360 a HD-DVD drive. Still would've been cheaper than the PS3 (though maybe only $100 or something of the like).

So far, from what I've seen, HD-DVDs tend to look better than BluRay. Since they both boast high defination, I'm curious as to WHY there's a difference in the quality; is it shitty luck, or shitty encoding?

Sony once stood behind Betamax. When the 'other product' (VHS) won over Betamax, they also started to produce VHS-based appliances. Sony did it once and, if HD-DVD wins over Blu-Ray, will do it again.

It seems this non-news article was written by Captain Obvious himself!

but back then they didnt have have the playstation 3 with a blu-ray drive in every one.

plus my point is that MS are all liike "oh ok, if we lose, that's fair game, if you cant beat them join them" , but sony would have to be forced to give it up. It's always been the same with sony and their proprietry shit.

it just pisses me off. i mean i bought some microSD cards for my mobile phone, only to discover it only takes MEMORY STICK micro, same shit, different form factor. sonys propriety rubbish.

I'm still dying for a ps3 and the euro launch just made it all the worse.

This is awsome. If M$ comes out with a BR drive like the HD drive at the same cost, it would be the true death of the PS3. I would be all over this addon. If any of you are into movies you would clearly know that BR is killing HD right now. It sucks, but it's true. Seems like nothing new comes out on HD. I was considering buying a cheap 20g PS3 just to get BR. But this is gonna keep me from doing that. Damn gotta luv M$. They are taking everything away from Sony to keep people from buying the PS3. Pretty soon PS# will have no exclusive games except games made by Sony. Now this....time for a party. Lets watch Sony fall to pieces.

MS could be doing a hybrid drive, support for Blueray and HD.  That would be interesting.

the great thing is that MS is giving people the choice - and saving us money in the process - esp for those that wish to wait until one format becomes dominant (many even believe that both may fail before the next-gen media is out).

sony chose to stuff one format onto the consumer...and make them pay for it...

Blu-Ray is killing HD-DVD? Sources?

Oh ya, your favorite movie came out on Blu-ray and not HD-DVD, that is your only source...

I dont have sources. What I have is this....My wife and I are big movie fans. We spend about $100 or so a week on DVD's. What I can tell you is this as a fact...When you go to places like best buys on tuesdays when the new movies drop you rarely find the new movies on HD-DVD. They all seem to be coming out on BlueRay. You watch tv, you rarely see them say "coming out on DVD and HD-DVD". 90% of the time they say "DVD and Blueray". Now hell I would love if you can tell me a source to buy my HD-DVD movies. Hell awsome. I would also love for you to give me more a reason to use my HD player for more than an upgraded DVD player. But I am sure you cant. I dont care about numbers or stats or even surveys online. What I care about is what I can buy in the stores or online. Right now if you are into buying movies you would clearly know and see that for every 1 HD movie that drops 10 - 15 drop for BR. Hell I dont even remember the last HD movie that was put out. I mean damn, there are tons of old movies on HD that I already have on DVD. But what about the new stuff? Please show me where to buy new HD movies. If you can't well.....thats my whole point. So again...good job Microsoft this will be a welcome addon. By making it, does not by any means that microsoft made a bad decision or loss the media war. It just means they are giving it's loyal customers a choice. So why even argue? At lease we have a choice.

I am also amazed by people saying one format looks better than the other. Well thats just BS. They both look amazing. I think what people are seeing is their crappy TV's. You put either player on a nice tv and you will love em both. Unless your some crazy movie technical master then there really is not much difference to the human eye on the quality. Put them on my 52 inch 1080i TV and they look like heaven.

Do you think other companies DON'T do this?

2 Popular formats, SD and MMC have a total of 6 variations (that I know of!).  None are forward compatible.

SD card
Mini SD card
Micro SD card

MMC
Mini MMC
Mini MMC-DV

my point was, that samsung, nokia etc would all use a standard type, be it microsd or whatever, whilst sony has to use its own proprietry cards.

I have THREE 50" 1080p sets. I've had Blu-Ray and HD-DVD hooked up to all of them at some time or another (videophile get together). I've also seen both technologies in other peoples dedicated Home Theater setups with there 100"+ screens and their professionally calibrated 20k+ digital and CRT based projectors. I can tell you that there is a difference when comparing the first generation of high def. movies that used a different compression type.

Maybe you can't tell because you don't have a properly calibrated TV, or you don't know what good color reproduction looks like and think that it's a subjective matter, or you don't know what macro-blocking is, etc.  The point is, just because you don't see it on your TV from where you sit, doesn't mean it is NOT there. You don't even have to see it first hand to know that it is there. All you have to do is look at the difference in the compression technology. There is a difference in quality between the two and it's funny that every time this topic comes up Blu-Ray fanatics get all worked up when we all know that if it was the other way around they would be throwing it in the HD-DVD fans faces.

I personally could care less because I'm not a big fan of either format. But I do know that there is a difference and I DO tell the truth. If you don't want to believe it then thats fine. But don't misinform people by telling them Blu-Ray is better, or there is no difference. There may be no difference to you but then again who are you? Are you an expert in the field? How much experience have you had with both formats? Because the people who have had experience with both formats and actually know what to look for because they are EXPERTS have explained why first generation HD-DVD looked better then Blu-Ray movies using MPEG-2.

My source on that would be when I go to Best Buy.  I look at the HD section and then I look at the Blue-Ray section.  The BR section is almost twice the size and with many more, good and newer releases.  And it isnt just opinion Im basing the good movie thing on.  Its common sense.  I can barely find a movie that I would be willing to shell out 25-30 bucks for on HD but there are multiple titles on BR that I would actually like to own.  And I own HD-dvd with my 360.
Im sorry but HD-dvd is losing big time.  But Im not sad.  I got plenty of use out of my hd-dvd and when M$ offers a BR Ill get that too...So I dont feel ripped off.  At least I wasnt forced to buy a HD-dvd player  with my 360 for 600.00

Who cares? I don't know why anyone would be so fanboy over one or the other, they are both HiDef and that's all that matters.

I think people are upset because they jumped the gun with wishful thinking that if they dropped $200 on the HD-DVD Player it might come out on top, but it appears that Bluray will win. That's your own damn fault knowing that there was a format war and buying before it was over. Could have purchased 3 new games for the cost of that stupid ugly ass HD player. rolleyes.gif

Anyway, the Hi-Def movies aren't all that impressive to me anyway and certainly not worth the cost of the movies when you can pickup a standard DVD for $13 or less.

Now you know how Betamax owners felt.  tongue.gif
