51GB triple-layer HD DVDs in the pipeline?

From engadget.com:

At an HD DVD presentation held at CES, an interesting PowerPoint slide caught our eye, as it (very briefly) described plans to "expand HD DVD disc capacity from 15GB to 17GB per layer, and moreover, to add a third layer as well, eventually resulting in a 51GB HD DVD disc. Aside from upping the ante on Blu-ray's capacity by a measly 1GB (currently, at least), it's also noted that "technical feasibility" has yet to be confirmed, and that standardization wouldn't occur until Q4 of this year at the earliest, but it's a novel idea to say the least.

Adding the capacity isn't THAT big of a deal...

They aren't compressing it to fit in the current constraints of HD-DVD, they'll just make the servos move a little further out to give the extra 2 GB space and force the laser lens to re-focus a little deeper in the disk.

There may be some drives not capable of the first due to how they were manufactured, but all should be able to re-focus the laser.

Well I have to hope that the first batch of players sold were built with this in mind. If so, a firmware update would likely enable that functionality. If not, then I'd have to buy another player. That would, in fact, be a big deal to me.

Glad to know they can expand the capacity before more HD DVD burners are readily, and cheaply available.  Hopefully, the writable media will be capable of this as well.  After that, i figure it will be the write speed to pick up as well cuz i never enjoyed writing DVD media at 1x when those came out!

Of course at this point in time it'd be far more useful to figure out how to make tri or quad layer regular DVDs. 13.5/18Gb discs that work on normal drives, especially the 360's... Mmmm.

Sounds good to me can't wait.

Just speculation but one would think the triple layer disks would work on any HDDVD player, at least it better.

And blue ray is nowhere near to releasing a 200 gb disk, they just came out with dual layer a couple months ago!!

Lastly there is no such thing as to much storage.

Ha.  Another reason for me to like HD-DVD more than Blu-ray. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

So this means that hd-dvd goes form a maximum capacity of 60gb to 68gb. Still pretty ways of from blu-rays maximum wich is 200gb. Hd-dvd doesn't stand a chance vs blu-ray in storage.

annnnnnd why?  exactly. the xbox360 has no use for tri or quad layer regular dvds.

if , during the xbox360's lifespan, games routinely went over the 8.5gb capacity, consumers aren't going to thrown a hissy fit at having multiple disc games. only the people here will.
