5.1 Dolby Surround Question
« on: October 02, 2006, 06:25:00 AM »

Would the standard L & R Phono plugs use all 5 speakers for specific sound such as centre (behind you) or right rear (south east) speaker & not all speakers at once? (For a game called dead rising where the 5.1 sound tells you where offscreen zombies are). Or would it be possible to make a homemade adapter cable that changes the optical output cable into a load of phono plugs (for plugging into the other phono sockets as above)?

(Tried to add this earlier but posting time limit wouldn't allow it so I had to add a new post).

No!  Standard L & R plugs, red and white are just that, 2 channels.  They only seperate right from left.  You could get the sound to play through all 5 speakers, but they would basically all be putting out the same sound, no distinction from left, right, front, back.  You're gonna want to use the digital optical connection for true surround sound.  The speakers you linked to look like they are intended for a PC.  Not sure if you could get them to properly work with a 360.  You're gonna need an A/V receiver, or a set of speakers with built in dolby decoder and an optical input.

Thanks for the info guys. Glad I didn't buy those speakers. I noticed some "4Gamers" speakers on ebay that were supposed to be dolby surround (about £90), they had an optical input for xbox1, do you think they would they work with the 360? Here.

The only thing I have against those is the company. On ebay they're going for 85 quid plus postage, but on their website they're going for 130 quid, (If they had any in stock?).

I realise they seem cheap and cheerful, but you might want to spend a bit more and get a Logitech set. (Logitech tend to make good stuff)

So do the 4gamers speakers have true 5.1 dolby digital surround & would it work with xbox360 as it has an xbox1 adapter & an optical input connector? Also, the Logitech speakers: do they have an optical input for use with xbox360?

It Supports up to 7 simultaneous devices, including 2 optical inputs, 1 co-ax digital input and an auxiliary MP3 player input.
