I've followed all the instructions to the letter, as far as I can see.
- on xbox 360, I'm at the screen past where it gives you the pass code where it says 'stay on this screen while installing software on your PC'
- I go to http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup, download the install for a media center PC (i've tried both the full and the lite), install it.

It completes, and just says 'XBOX 360 now authorized' but it never asks for the passcode.  Then the windows media connect screen opens and shows that the Xbox 360 is allowed, but back on the 360 nothing has changed.  I can share audio and pictures fine, so I know the network is all good, but it won't register the 'extender' part on my 360 so I can't use media center.  Arg, I want to stream divx!  any help appreciated.

You r running  media center 2005 ?

Have you installed the rollup 2 update ?

How are you connected to your pc ?

If so just de-install and try re-installing, same thing happened to me and that fixed the problem.

Im using direct connection by the way.

I am running media center 2005, and I have tried de-installing and re-installing the extender software a variety of times.  I am starting to wonder about my media center edition of XP though.  It is a gateway computer and the media center OS came bundled on it, I wonder if it is slightly 'off'.  When I go and do the software check as per the instructions this is the version:

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Version: 5.1.2700.2180
(private/xpsp_mce.040810-0205)

But when I go to My Computer / General tab where you check the version of window I see

Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Does this seem normal?  I do not know if I've installed the rollup 2 update as I never saw it come through windows update - is there a forced install that I could try?

I'm connected to my PC through my router on a local area network wired connection

Yes thats normal.  I also have MCE 2005 and it says version 2002 under my computer properties.  It also works for me no prob.  I had problems installing it on one of my routers so I used the other one and it worked.  There are quite a few things that can effect it not working.

Interesting.  I'm leaning more toward thinking that my copy of XP is some freak of nature from Gateway.  I found a direct download to the rollup 2 windows update patch and when I tried to install it I got an error saying 'this update can only be installed on Windows XP media Center 2005'  - so obviously my OS is not identifying itself as such, which is probably why the xbox install isn't working properly.

There might be something else what installer didi you download. Because when downloading the extender software from M$ you have to options software for MCE and for MCE with uptade rollup 2. Make sure you downloaded the right one.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) you are a god petegas. I have been trying to remedy this problem for weeks. I believe it should be addressed on the xbox support pages as the xbox guys were about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Many thanks again dude. fOZZY!!!

Having lots of problems connecting my computer to XBOX 360

I am using Windows XP w SP-2
I downloaded the XP SP-2 version of Media Center
I turned off my firewall to avoid problems (momentarily)
I installed the software and it never asks me for the 8 digit code.

What the heck!

I saw the posts on the registry
What am I editing the entry doesn't look like what is described in the post

Very frustrating problem. The XBOX 360 support site is no help.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'm having the EXACT same problem, but with WinXP SP2 as the person above.

That registry key doesn't exist and I can't find one that is similiar. Ideas?

360 will only talk to a MCE pc....
no hacks no crack no patches..

if you dont have the full blown MCE your 360 isnt going to play ball.

Max P,

I've installed MCE 2005 on VMWare but when I try to install rollup 2 or the 360 pcsetup file I always get a error at the beginning and it won't install.

For the rollup it tries to install the 1st hotfix, fails, then reboots after a system restore.

For the pcsetup it initializes and tries to install extender software and says setup error contact manufacturer or something.

I'm running MCE 2005 (says 2002 XP 2 under My Computer), I've changed the regkey to 3.0 and that didn't change anything.  Any suggestions?  I also don't have any patches or fixes installed.
