On the logitech site, the names are different. One says precision and one doesn't. Is that part correct in that the cheaper non-glossy one is the analog one with more precision?

The controller believed to be "true analog" is here, is called the "Logitech Cordless Controller for Xbox," and has part number 963279-0403 (this controller is the older of the two).

The controller believed to be "not analog" is here, is called the "Logitech Cordless Precision Controller for Xbox," and has part number 963321-0403 (this controller is the newer of the two).

Although I haven't tried the older Logitech wireless controller, I think the newer one is fine.  I'm still considering getting one of the older ones for comparison, however.

It's highly likely that this is true.

It takes quite a while to "drain the chain" of old inventory and most vendors do not want to needlessly piss off their retail chains by forcing them to sell at a big loss.

Good idea, ArcticWolf.  I'll give Splinter Cell:PT (and maybe Metal Arms) a test tonight and report my findings.

Sorry, but you can not install an on/off button inside of a wireless controller.  You need to actually ground the yellow wire on the controller connecter, something you aren't going to be able to do wireless.  You could technically install it on the receiver box that plugs into the xbox but that would be kind of pointless.

I suggest the XIR Remote mod to let you switch the xbox on/off with an IR signal.

Actuall, you can. There's a great tutorial right here on this very site.

Like I said before, I can't tell the difference. Splinter Cell plays the same as with any other controller.

muell67, those prices are in CDN, not USD (all prices mentioned before were in USD).  Also, that link you sent doesn't list the new wireless controller.

A couple things: first of all, I tried out the controller on Chronicles of Riddick last night.  The sticks definitely have an analog feel to them.  Secondly, I decided to get to the bottom of this, and take some pictures of the controller's inside.  Here are the pics, for your viewing pleasure:

Oh, and pay special attention to this one:

Now, I'm no electrical engineer, but those really look a lot like potentiometers.

Logitech marketing strikes again!

muhaha.gif

It also looks like they reduced the component count down to 2 IC's to get the better power utilization.

Thanks, I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier. blink.gif

Whether it's marketing or a website error, I think we can finally put this "analog" discussion to rest.  Regarding battery life: I don't know exactly how long the batteries in the old one last, but the manual for the new one states that the batteries last for 50 hours with rumble enabled, and then an additional 100 hours after that with rumble disabled.

Final verdict?  I believe it's safe to say that this newer controller is at least funtionally equivalent to the older one.

Recommendation?  Whether you decide to purchase the old one or the new one, I believe you'll be satisfied either way.

Do we all agree (I'm fishing for the opjose seal of approval laugh.gif )?

Okay, I suppose I stand corrected.  My intention was to imply you can't do a standard on/off switch with the wireless remote like you do a wired one.

You could try to fit and rig up the sender for the RF doorbell mod, or you could try and stuff a seperate IR sender in there to send a signal to the XIR remote mod.

Yeah. I can't wait to try this one myself. Imagine: A newer, smaller Logitech wireless controller with the ability to turn on/off your Xbox! Man, I can't wait to pop one open and see if there's room.

Be aware though that several of the first batches off the line had a high defect rate due to a manufacturing problem which has now been corrected.

After you hook it up and "connect" the controller and the receiver if the green light on the receiver continually blinks in a random sequence it is picking up RF noise and the controller won't function very well at all.

If your unit shows this problem it is defiantly a defect and should be exchanged.  The problem is with the wireless receiver unit and not the controller.

I cant believe this.  I bought two of these controllers the day they were stocked at wal-mart (at least a month before their official release) and have been toiling over them forever trying to figure out what is causing the interference and why they suck so bad.  So I look all around, but everbody is giving this controller rave reviews.  I have a Wireless Madcatz Lynx as well and just about to return these and order two more lynx online until i read this post.  The symptoms you describes hit the nail on the head so I immediately went back to wal-mart and exchanged them stating the reason and they said there was no recall for the controllers but since wal-mart rocks, they went ahead and let me exchange them.  So I get back home and see an immediate difference when i plug them in, no more flashing of the LED in the receiver and it only turns on when i press a button and isnt continuously on like before.

Thanks again for this timely bit of information!  Now I see why everybody loves these controllers!  I like to yell!
