The $50 one also has an option to disable rumble, whereas the $70 one does not.  The $50 one is smaller than the $70 one.  And, for the record, the $50 one works just fine (found it at Wal-Mart for $40!).  I can't compare any more than that, since I don't have the $70 one.

According to Logitech, the more expensive one has dual ANALOG sticks while the cheaper one uses digital switches for the sticks.

The former also runs longer on batteries. (which is why I got it.).

Actually, the website is incorrect.
The new controller most defiantly has dual ANALOG sticks.

Be aware though that several of the first batches off the line had a high defect rate due to a manufacturing problem which has now been corrected.

After you hook it up and "connect" the controller and the receiver if the green light on the receiver continually blinks in a random sequence it is picking up RF noise and the controller won't function very well at all.

If your unit shows this problem it is defiantly a defect and should be exchanged.  The problem is with the wireless receiver unit and not the controller.

Actually, opjose is right, according to Logitech's site.  The "Feature and Price Comparison Chart" on the right side of this page clearly shows that the newer one doesn't have analog sticks.  Obviously it didn't leave the sticks off the controller; however, I think we're all guessing that it doesn't use true analog sticks, and that the "digital" sticks are less responsive to fine-tuned minute control.  I do have one of these newer controllers, and I haven't really noticed a problem so far.  I definitely wouldn't say that it is "no good," although the older model could prove to be superior.

[Edit]Why is it that I always spell opjose's name with a b instead of a p?  I've got to work on that.

Yup although for all we know it could be a marketing ploy to justify the older units which may still be in stock.

E.G. the newer units -ARE- just as good, but they want some "difference" to be percieved.

It's not the first time a company has done something like this.

Very true.  I'm curious: I know Logitech's "comparison chart" says that the newer wireless controller doesn't have analog sticks, but I wonder if it's an error on the site, or has this "feature" (or lack thereof) been mentioned and/or marketed elsewhere?

Okay...

A digital joypad has X number of positions.
You push the joystick in the direction you want and that position is ON, let go and its OFF.  (the D-pad on the xbox)

It does not pick up subtle movement, its either on or off, hence why its called digital.

An analog joypad will have potentiometer motion sensors to monitor the sticks position on the X-axis and the Y-axis, this gets you the sticks exact position at any given moment in time.

Trust me, those two thumbsticks are considered analog, there is no room for debate.

The siganls of course get converted  to digital to be sent to the xbox, but those sticks are of an analog design, to say otherwise is insane.

I don't know if the website is wrong, or if marketing got the wrong information or what.

QUOTE (muell67 @ Jun 17 2004, 12:37 AM)
thanks for all the input. there is one other thing I didnt mention. Has anyone taken either of these controllers apart? I would like to set it up with a on off switch for my xbox and Im assuming Im going to need some extra room inside the controller anyone know wich one has more room inside it. I guess both controllers are about the same size on the outside correct.

Sorry, but you can not install an on/off button inside of a wireless controller.  You need to actually ground the yellow wire on the controller connecter, something you aren't going to be able to do wireless.  You could technically install it on the receiver box that plugs into the xbox but that would be kind of pointless.

I suggest the XIR Remote mod to let you switch the xbox on/off with an IR signal.

Unless I'm mistaken, the yoshi thing was a universal remote fitted inside an original Logitech Wireless Xbox controller.  I assume this was used in conjunction with an XIR-type device.

On the logitech site, the names are different. One says precision and one doesn't. Is that part correct in that the cheaper non-glossy one is the analog one with more precision?
