Xbox Harddrive Into Pc
« on: June 09, 2004, 08:59:00 PM »

Hey,  I wanted to get an extra 8 gigs for my computer so I decided to put my old original xbox harddrive into my PC.  I read the tutorial on the site for installing it and everything but the formating part is not working for me.

enter "MMC" in RUN
File-->Add/Remove Snap-in
Click on ADD
New window appears double click on Disk Management
New window, click finish
Click on OK
Click on Disk Management(LOCAL)
then right click on disk 1 and select the first option
now right click on the right box next to the Disk 1 Box
Then click on format, and format it the way you want it, select your partition letter and your ready to go.

it says to right click on disk 1 but I see no Disk 1 box in the mmc disk management window.  It only shows my Disk 0 (master harddrive) and both my cdrom drives.  I tried going into dos at startup and doing everything through fdisk like many sites said to do but that didn't make a difference for me either.  I also tried partitionmagic but it doesn't recognize my drive either.  How can I be able to see the drive so I can format it?  I am pisitive I have the jumper settings correct because I have checked over them a ton of times already.  I also made sure the ide cables were in correct but still it isn't working.  Sorry if this was asked before.  I tried the search but it didn't find anything dealing with my problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Make sure that you unlock your xbox drive and leave it that way before putting it into your computer, otherwise it won't be able to read it.

well according to the tutorial the harddrive should be unlocked.  I am going to try a lil later to put the harddrive back in my xbox and use a new version of evox to unlock it just to make sure.

haha    thanks       yeah I read about cmos on a couple different sites but whenever I go into my bios it doesn't have a setting for that at all.  I have an older compaq computer and the bios dont have that.  There aren't any updates for the bios either so I have no clue what to do.

Ok I put the original harddrive back into my xbox and put the newest version of evox on it and unlocked it just to make sure it was unlocked.  Then I put it back in my pc with it set to slave but still I dont see the drive.  I also put it to cable select but still couldn't see it.  I am guessing that it is probably my bios that aren't letting me see it.  Any ideas? uhh.gif

I doubt it's your bios. I was having the same problem with my xbhdd, but I had to take out my pc hdd and only boot up with my xb hdd in. You do need a bootdisk though.  Then you should be able to format your drive. Just make sure you have your cable settings right, otherwise I don't think will work. I think mine was on master.

The older Compaqs used a configuration CD, or floppy and/or a special configuration partition to change hardware layout.

crystalman62:  tell me if this is correct.  I take out my main harddrive in my computer.  I put the jumper settings for my xbox harddrive to master and then put that into my pc.  The original harddrive wont be attached at all.  I then boot my computer with a windows xp boot disk (or is it just a normal dos bootdisk?) Then what do I do?  Do I format it using the fdisk command?  Yeah sorry I am not the greatest at this.  Thanks

well yeah, all I did, (cause I had mine unlocked, but it wouldn't read it on the second channel) was put it on the first channel with it set to master I think(don't remember if it was on cable select or not. you might try master first and then cs) then boot your pc up with only the xbox drive in(not your pc drive). You are basically using your bootdisk(xp or regular bootdisk works fine. I made mine under the standard "make bootdisk" feature in xp) to format your xbhdd. If I remember, I had to look it up to make sure, yeah I think it was the fdisk command. I used the help command to figure it out. You should be able to quick format it, and then when you reboot it with your pc hdd in and your xbhdd in, you should be able to use your mmc to set the settings just the way you want them. I don't think I'm leaving anything out. It should work.
I hope all this works for you.

Yep I am almost positive that is what I did whenever I tried earlier today.  Went though the fdisk and everything but whenever I put them both back into my PC and go into mmc it still doesn't read my second disk.  All that comes up is drive 0 C: partition and D: partition.  And then my cdrom and dvd drives.  This thing is really pissing me off. Oh well.  If you have any more suggestions I would greatly appreciate it but if not thanks for your help beerchug.gif

you probably already did this but i have nothing more to say:
when you reboot your pc, and it shows the F8 to enter setup(i think it's F8. it's F10 on some PCs. whatever. )You can set the disk channels in there somewhere. On mine, it has
channel 1_0: main hdd
channel 1_1: xbox hdd
channel 2_0: cd-rom drive
channel 2_1: none

Like I said before, you probably already did this, but you need to set it so your xbhdd is on one of these channels. If it doesn't show up as one of the choices, then i don't know what to tell you. Cause mine showed up after I formatted it and I think it's on cable select right now. either that or slave. don't remember. But it sounds like your'e so close to having it work. don't give up. your'e almost there.
