so your pc doesn't have setting that has like settings: off, auto? cause when i went into there, there was that auto option, and I clicked on that one and it then said I had 8000K as on my second channel. but if you don't have those, then I think I am done. I haven't a clue how to work around that. sorry.

Yeah I found that really weird that my bios doesn't have that setting.  Whenever I do go into the fdisk thing my second drive is read as a 7985mb(something like that) drive, so it is reading it through that.  Yeah I am not sure what is up with my bios not having that setting.  I will get back in a lil bit though to trying to get it working.  Thanks for your help!

I guess I'm the "sum 1".

Post the Compaq model number as we can look it up at their web site.

I couldn't of said that any better.  Ok I tried some new stuff.  I completly unplugged my old harddrive and put just my xbox on in and ran my compaq quickrestore disks.  They completly reformated my harddrive and installed windows 98 onto it.  Then I plugged my old harddrive back as the master and the xbox one as slave and booted back into windows xp pro, went into mmc but my xbox harddrive was still not showing up.  I then set my xbox harddrive as master and my old one as slave and booted up into windows 98.  In there I ran partitionmagic and was able to see both drives.  Isn't it kinda weird that I can see both of them in windows 98 but not in windows xp pro?  I have no clue what to do about this.  Any ideas?  Are there any settings in xp pro that you have to enable before a second drive can be read?  Thanks

Not really.

If you can see the drive in WinME it should be visible in XP unless an updated IDE driver is required... which is somewhat doubtful.

Under WinME/9x can you do anything to the slave drive?

QUOTE

Set the device configuration jumper and connect the end of the IDE cable into the IDE interface connector on the back of the drive as follows (figure 5 ):

If there is only one hard drive in the computer, connect the IDE ribbon cable using the last connector. Set the small device configuration jumper over the two pins labeled Cable Select or CS. If the drive is not labeled, refer to the drive's documentation.

If there are two hard drives in the computer, connect the IDE ribbon cable using the connector that is not used. Set the small device configuration jumper over the two pins labeled Cable Select or CS. If the drive is not labeled, refer to the drive's documentation.

So this may be the problem!

I tried both harddrives on cable select but in XP it is still not recognizing the second drive.  In windows 98 it sees both of them but not XP pro.

There ARE some conditions under which dissimiliar IDE drives will not show up due to mismatched timings over the IDE bus.

USUALLY you can force these drives to appear by lowering the UDMA xfer rate (as Win9x/Me does.

XP will often put the bus back to the higher data rates which may cause the problem.

SO. Go into the device manager and find the IDE ATA/ATAPI Interface controller section and open it.

Then on your IDE Controllers, set the XFER rate lower (you can set it back later).

At worst try the upper PIO modes.

If XP doesn't set it back upon the next reboot, this may help.

OK I went into my device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and then my primary IDE channel.  That is the channel for my harddrives.  Whenver I go in there I searched all around for xfer rates but couldn't find anything.  I went into all the properties, advanced settings and whatnot but couldn't find anything.  The three different controllers I can go into are my Intel® 92901AB Bus Master IDE controller, Primary IDE channel, and Secondary IDE channel.  I can't find any xfer rates in any of them.  Am I doing something wrong or just being stupid and skipping right over them? Sorry.  When I was in the Primary IDE Channel, I went to the advanced settings and realized that it had device 0 and device 1.  Under device 0 it was set to have auto detection for the device type but under device 1 it had none.  Could that be the reason why my computer wasn't reading the second harddrive?  I am going to check that a lil later to see if it works.  I gotta go do a lil yard work first.  Thanks for your continous help.
