anyone know if it is possible to obtain your gamertag on a new hdd, got the ban today and was thinking of buying an elite anyway. Hope someone can verify this?

yeah your good to go. the bans are related to the actual 360's electronic serial number. not your gamertag. you can buy a new box for retail, and test your retail backups on your banned box, you just cant test them on live (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

haha, funny thing is i havent played a backup in almost a year, just forgot bout the firmware still being present. thanks for reply mate

i think you just need to recover your gamertag under the recovery section before you sign into live
