Poff. And Then The Smell....
« on: June 04, 2004, 11:13:00 PM »

Hi. The thing is that i live in EU and we have 230 V here. But my Xbox is NTSC so I use a stepdown converter to make it down to 110 V.

Yesterday I was playing games with my friends and I pulled out the xbox and plugged in the wrong cable and that was connected so 230V straight into the Xbox. Bang! Smelled definately burned after sad.gif

What advise can you guys give me. The easiest would probably to buy a new xbox, since i can't fix this right? Sure I can buy a new PSU but they cost like 75$ here and my dvd-drive is also broken so I probably need that one as well and a total sum of 125$ is a bit to expensive.

Has this happened to anyone else and can you guarantee that only the PSU is dead so I can sell the other parts or something...

Thanks in advance.

Maybe I just have to replace these parts. But I am not sure what of them caused the "fire". Probably it's the big round thing. That is a friggin huge condensator right?

Unfortunatley I dont have any friend with modded xbox so I doubt they will open theirs and take out their PSU's hehe smile.gif

But I'm gonna take out the PSU and test that condensator with a multimeter and see if anything happens.

Any more hints?

Here's picture BTW:

In your picture, do you see the green oviod thing in the middle left?

That is a filtering capacitor (eh, I'm not too up in my Brit-speak, but I believe condenser meant battery right?).

Ok now look to the right of the "cans" (the upright black plastic encased cylinders). There USED to be another one there!

If you look closely you'll see the debris and scars on the circuit board and side of the Xbox.

USUALLY these capacitors are there to protect the Xbox from surges.

If it blew fast enough the PSU might be otherwise fine.

You'll need another one of identical value and type to the green ovoid one on the left to fix this.

Note that a 220 surge is relatively "slow" for these so additional damage may have been done and you'll need a new PSU, but several other people have been able to repair theirs in an identical circumstance by simply replacing the blow capacitor.

I have searched on google trying to find a highrespic of the PSU for 1.0. I have a 1.0 and I have read that it's not the same as newer PSU's. Are you sure there should be one more of those green things? I can't find any holes where it could have been placed or any solderingpoints on the other side either.

Thanks for your answer.

Yup, the other one "DISAPPEARED"! when if blew up.

That was the POOF you heard and where the smoke came from.

There was another identical poster hear last week, go back on the threads and you'll see exactly the same thing, although he posted far more complete pictures.

In them you'll see what he did.

I have searched for hours now hehe.

Thread1
Fuse guide
Thread2
Thread3

Those were the interesting threads I found. And I looked all the way back to 18th May. Was it even before that?

Anyway My PSU doesn't look like the one in the replace-fuse-guide. Later I will upload an picture from the other side of the PSU. I can't see any holes that the thing you are talking about was.

And none of those threads contained "far more pictures". Maybe you meant Thread3? If you look at that pic. I don't see the green thing on the other side.

BTW no smoke came from the xbox it just smelled bad.

EDIT: Updated with more pictures.

Can you please point out on any of these pictures where that capacitor were.

It should have been located exactly where your big burn mark is.

I'd have to compare it against a 1.0 box, which I can do next week.

I have made some more research.

It's a Delta Power Supply. i also found some high resolution pics of one (for 1.1 tho, but looks the same)

Pic1
I can't see it, so please explain where it is tongue.gif

But I also found that this fuse is not working.
Pic2
It's located near where the cord is plugged in. A few centimeters from the burnmarks.

In Pic 1 it should be the "disc" filtering capacitor just to the left of the black upper cylindrical capacitor.

The electronics frequently change, and the last shot I saw had what was there identical to the lower green one.

As I mentioned I'll have to check against a 1.0 Delta to tell you with certainty what blew up and it's value.

If you are talking about that yellow thing? It is still there a bit burned tho. It has plastic around it. But when using a multimeter it shows it as ok.

Ok it seems like this "overvoltageprotection" is the broken part. I removed and now I am gonna test without just to see if it works without it.

picture

There's a similiar next to it with that text on it. Can someone explain what I need. Is that 151 V ?

Thanks. and opjose answer in this thread when you have looked at that power supply. Thanks.

EDIT: It's working without that "overvoltageprotector" but I will see if I can get hold of one first. I don't want to fry my xbox again hehe.

I will, I'm awaiting a replacement motherboard which should arrive tomorrow for an old 1.0 Xbox I own.

As soon as I get it I'll be opening the unit up so I'll get you an answer and/or pictures.

Ok. Can you also see what way that yellow "overvoltageprotection" (Yellow) was turned. With the text to the big black cylinders or? Read the text and see if it matches what i wrote in the picture. Z151 and so on.
